Because the original underground lines were built in conjunction with the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a decision was made to have the lines in shallow tunnels so as to minimise the height difference between the underground rails and their extension across the bridge.
The third underground line is the Airport Line, which opened in the year 2000, prior to the Sydney Olympics.
The line was originally intended to be extended from Epping to Parramatta, incorporating the existing Carlingford line, however this section has been postponed indefinitely.

It consists of a line that begins at Town Hall station in the City Circle, at Central station it splits into a branch that runs via Sydenham and a branch that runs via Sydney Airport that both rejoin at Beverly Hills.
The line and some of the stations were constructed by a corporation and attract a higher fare than is usual for CityRail lines.

The Epping to Chatswood line (originally to be the Parramatta Rail Link) is a railway line under construction in the Northern suburbs of Sydney, Australia.
This required the elimination of the planned station at the University of Technology, Sydney, Kuring-gai Campus; the required increased depth of the tunnel to go under the river made a station at that point impractical, due to the required depth of the escalator shafts.
The railway line was originally intended to continue from Epping to Parramatta, partially travelling along the existing Carlingford railway line, Sydney surface line which would be widened from single-track to dual-track.

When many of Sydney's railways have been in operation for over 100 years, it is simply foolish to judge the success of the newest line by its performance in the first 3-4 years.
At 7-8 trains per hour, the airport line is nowhere near its maximum capacity.
At the same time that Mr Costa was using the Airport Rail Link "disaster" to cancel the Parramatta Rail Link, other parts of his own Government were planning on the basis of a significant expansion at Green Square, triggered by the building of the station.
