  Airspeed Ambassador History
The Airspeed Ambassador was originally designed to meet one of the many specifications outlined by the Brabazon committee in 1943.
The appearance of the Ambassador owed a lot to the Lockheed Constellation, with its tricycle undercarriage, triple tail and flowing fuselage lines.
Many Ambassadors flew with other airlines after serving with BEA, most notably Dan-Air who used the old aircraft to establish themselves in the newly developing package holiday sector.

  Wikipedia: Airspeed
Airspeed also refers to the speed of an aircraft in relation to the air which may be different from groundspeed which is the speed of the aircraft in relation to the ground.
The difference between airspeed and groundspeed is a function of the velocity and direction of the wind.
Airspeed is important because it determines the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft.

 Airspeed Ambassador
The Airspeed Ambassador was a twin piston engined airliner that first flew on July 10, 1947 and served in very small numbers through the 1950s.
Airspeed was asked to prepare an unpressurised design in the 14.5 tonne gross weight class using two Bristol Hercules radials.
The Ambassador would be pressurised, have more powerful Bristol Centaurus radials, and have a maximum gross weight of almost 24 tonnes.

Munich air disaster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Although originally blamed on pilot error, the crash was subsequently found to have been caused by the build-up of slush towards the ends of the runway, causing a deceleration of the aircraft and preventing safe-flying-speed from being attained.
Previous aircraft types fitted with tail-wheel undercarriages had not been greatly affected by slush, (due to the geometry of these undercarriages in relation to the aircraft's centre-of-gravity) but newer types incorporating nosewheel landing-gear (such as the Ambassador) with the mainwheels behind the centre-of-gravity were found to be vulnerable.
The accident resulted in the instigation of operating limits for the amount of slush build-up permitted on runways.

In this respect, Stewart Wilson does an excellent job, taking the reader from the early beginnings with a Fokker Universal and an Airspeed Envoy, on through the classic propliner years with such interesting types as the Sandringham, Convair 440s, and even a DHC Caribou.
As I thumbed through this book I found myself wanting new-tool kits of quite a few airliners, such as the Convair 440, the Airspeed Ambassador, and the Fokker F28.
The various subsidiary airlines that became part of Ansett provide a wide variety of liveries that many outside of Australia might not be familiar with, and this book has photos of many of them.
