Science Fair Projects - Airspeed Oxford
The Airspeed AS10 Oxford was a twin-engine aircraft used for training British Commonwealth aircrews in navigation, radio-operating, bombing and gunnery during World War II.
The Oxford was based on Airspeed's commercial 8-seater Envoy III, seven of which had been modified for the South African Air Force as the "Convertible Envoy", equipped with a single machine-gun in a hand-operated Armstrong Whitworth dorsal turret for training air-gunners.
In producing the Oxford Mk I for the Royal Air Force, Airspeed increased the wingspan, modified the nose and employed fully-cowled Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah IX radial engines.

Airspeed can also be predicted using a published formula.
The maximum speed the birds could maintain was 13–14 meters per second, and although the Lund study does not discuss cruising flight in particular, the most efficient flapping (7 beats per second) occurred at an airspeed in the range of 8–11 meters per second, with an amplitude of 90–100° (17–19 cm).

By the early 1930's de Havilland and Airspeed were competitors in the civil aircraft field.
De Havilland, despite clinging to slow biplanes compared to Airspeed's faster, retractable undercarriage monoplanes, continued dominating the market due to their proven record, and their extensive sales, marketing and service forces.
After the cancellation of the Airship Program in 1930, Tiltman and Norway jointly founded Airspeed, Ltd. The following year, despite the recession, the company was able to secure £5,000, well short of their target of £40,000.

 Henry Warren
I believe that Warren is based on two real life characters: the author himself, and Lord Grimthorpe, the wealthy English nobleman who risked his fortune to keep Airspeed, Ltd. afloat, while Nevil risked his own reputation and freedom toward the same end.
As Julian Smith remarked in his biography of Nevil Shute: Many of the motives and traits of Warren and Nevil Shute are interchangeable: Both are hard-working, imaginative men, who had great faith in English industry and in their mission to provide work.
Henry Warren goes to prison for writing a falsely optimistic prospectus for his shipyard, and Shute, to keep Airspeed viable in 1934, had gained a reputation with his co-directors for reckless and unscrupulous optimism that came close to dishonesty.
