 The Aviator (2004)
It's a scene that is re-created in Martin Scorsese's newest epic, his Hughes' biopic The Aviator, and it's the Spruce Goose that provides an apt metaphor for this misfire of a movie: It's big and sleek, a thrilling engineering marvel, but it only ever briefly takes flight.
He starts with a Citizen Kane-like moment when the boy Howard stands naked in front of his mother while she lectures him on disease—thus his lifelong germ phobia was born.
The story fast-forwards to the now-adult and orphaned heir conquering Hollywood and the nascent aviation world, concentrating on some of his lovers, some of his more famous flights and airplane design, the two movies he directed (Hell's Angels and The Outlaw), and some of his business and government dealings.

With this in mind, we decided to salute her photographically, along with the personal remembrances of a few of us who were fortunate to fly supersonically on an airplane we will fondly remember and sorely miss.
As soon as we boarded I turned to get a look at the cockpit, then was amazed at how narrow Concorde actually is. Anne took the window while I leaned into the aisle, absorbing more views of the cockpit as the pilots went through their preflight checklist.

Barnstomers and Early Aviators - Introduction to The Triumph of Instrument Flight
In differing sectors of the aviator spectrum in the 1920s were barnstormers, mail pilots, military pilots and very late in that decade, a few airline pilots.
The diversity in human interests is reflected in the fact that pilots in these very different flying professions had almost all come to aviation as the result of the impetus given to aviation by World War I. Two flights, known now to almost no living persons, come frequently to the author's mind.
It was named after a local aviation enthusiast who put up the money to complete an air facility in 1928, with four paved runways, hangar with corner tower, passenger ramp and space for parked aircraft.

For the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), January’s crash of US Airways Express Flight 5481 in Charlotte, N.C., appears to have been one crash too many.
Pending the outcome of public comment, the FAA now will require commuter airlines to weigh all carry-on and checked baggage before takeoff, and may well have to weigh passengers instead of continuing to assume an average passenger weight of 175 pounds.
In the case of the US Airways flight, preliminary NTSB evidence suggests the 17,000-pound Beechcraft 1900D was 100 pounds below its maximum weight and within one percent of the rearward limit for its center of gravity.

For the early bush pilots and pioneers in aviation of the 1920's the technology was simply not there to provide a scheduled passenger service that ventured very far, let alone spanned the globe.

The Aviator Movie Review - The Aviator Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
"The Aviator" stars Leonardo DiCaprio, who's a sleek dynamo as the young Hughes and believably bullheaded and distraught as early middle age and obsessive-compulsive disorder kick in.
After a glittering first half that deals with Hughes's obsessive tinkering on his 1930 World War I film "Hell's Angels" and his fraught romance with Hepburn, "Aviator" sees mental illness descend even as Hughes fights to break the iron grip of Pan American Airways over the country's transatlantic commercial flight routes.
The weekend's a disaster -- the Hepburns are yappy, free-thinking elites who have no use for a tongue-tied California businessman -- and it marks the point in "The Aviator" where Hughes starts receding from the world.

 CNN.com - Review: 'Aviator' a breathtaking epic - Dec 17, 2004
"The Aviator" is framed by two major events in the life of Hughes: his legendary entry into Hollywood filmmaking and his nasty public battles with U.S. Sen. Owen Brewster (played beautifully by Alan Alda) over the usefulness of the planes that Hughes Aircraft built for the U.S. military during World War II.
This epic film also explores his fierce competition with Pan American Airways founder Juan Trippe, superbly played by Alec Baldwin, and his lifelong relationship with his right-hand man Noah Dietrich, expertly performed by character actor John C. Reilly.
This finely tuned script also gives us a look into Hughes' emerging mental illness and how heartbreakingly aware he was of his phobias and the way in which they were forcing him to withdraw from the world, only to fall headlong into madness later.

 washingtonpost.com: 'Aviator' Feels Like Autopilot
Here's what "The Aviator" means to do: duplicate the elusive magic of "Citizen Kane." Instead of then-dashing Orson Welles (who was 25 at the time) as a fictionalized, larger-than-life version of William Randolph Hearst, Scorsese's film has Leonardo DiCaprio (now 30, can you believe?) as a romantically impulsive Howard Hughes.
A firebrand of chutzpah, derring-do and imagination -- fortified, of course, by millions of dollars -- he follows his whims as a movie mogul (of RKO Pictures), aviation pioneer and, increasingly, a paranoid obsessive struggling with many psychological demons.
"The Aviator," scripted by John Logan, follows all the rules of Hollywood: big stars, promiscuous use of computer-generated imagery, and more emphasis on advertising and publicity than story development.
