It was wonderful to talk to you on the phone the other day from Chile Chico - really enjoyed having a chat - it is the only time in the last month that I've spoken to anyone (except Padraig in English and Daddy briefly on the phone was the time before that.
We rode on through the mountains to reach Chile Chico; it was nice being up in the hills off the road, although it is a very quiet road.
It was lovely riding with him; the dog enjoyed joining in herding the cows and he was a good companero, he cooked a wonderful assador the first day (some of our lamb and his beef) and a stew the next day and had an enormous fire blazing within minutes of stopping.

The The shield is one of the older of the chilean regions and was adopted after a contest.

Indeed, the closest Aisen province comes to a resident legend is the recycled tale of the "City of the Caesars" - - a forest-shrouded Shangri-La reputed to abound in golden furniture, silver farm implements and beautiful citizens.
Originally thought to be located somewhere in the Gobi, the legend was dusted off and relocated to Chile by a pair of Spanish deserters, who wandered through the southern Chilean forests in 1650, and (perhaps in an effort to avoid punishment) claimed to have discovered the legendary city along the way.
Sernatur, Chile's national tourist authority, has an office in Coyhaique that is a good place to start researching regional tours and fly-fishing information (www.sernatur.cl or 56-67-231752).

Environmental organizations in Chile are working hard to protect the forests, but deforestation throughout the country continues at a record-setting pace: every hour an area the size of 21 football fields is destroyed.
Many local communities like Aisen claim that they should be able to participate in these negotiations and reject industrial development if they believe it will benefit the companies at the expense of the local environment and community health.

Global Response letters and local and national opposition in Chile contributed toward a decision by the Regional Environmental Commission (COREMA) to require Canadian mining company Noranda Inc. to submit new information on the potential environmental impacts of its Alumysa aluminum plant, proposed for construction in the pristine Aisen region of Patagonia.

Puerto Aisen is just to the north of the fjord, but it takes up to about 10 hours to get there by boat.
