  Diocese of Aitape - General Information
Aitape is a fairly remote and quiet town on the north coast in Sandaun (formerly West Sepik) Province, with approximately 8000 inhabitants.
Aitape is the principal town and port of the district, one of the four districts of Sandaun Province.
Aitape is small, but has all basic facilities, including 240 V power (in general 24 hours), telephone, a bank, a post-office, a courthouse and a police station, a supermarket and many tradestores, a petrol station, two airstrips, two secondary schools, a mission office and a (rural) hospital.

 The Aitape 1998 tsunami: Reconstructing the event from interviews and field mapping.
Aitape is on the north coast, 160 km east of the international border.
Aitape is a small commercial center, district administrative headquarters and port, served by regular air services and accessible by road from Wewak in the east, and by 4-wheel-drive track and road from Vanimo in the west, when the weather is dry.
Survivors of the Aitape tsunami interpreted the thunderous boom and the roaring sound to be evidence that the tsunami was caused by a bomb that had been dropped by a low-flying jet plane.

 Aitape
In April 1944 the 32nd Division landed without opposition in the Aitape area, in conjunction with the main landing at Hollandia.
The object of this operation was to secure and hold the Tadji Airfield and to establish light naval facilities at Aitape to support further operations against the Japanese, who later counter attacked at the Driniumor River.
Since the 1974 recoveries at Tadji, one wreck this B-25 was selected for display at the school as a WWII Memorial for the town, and represents one of the last complete American wrecks in the Aitape area.

In Aitape we found our first real evidence of the tsunami wave: 3.5 m runup and inundation to over 150 m inland.
The wave was the smallest further west in the bay, the region protected by a headland.
There was also evidence of large coral bouders that had been moved around by the force of the wave.

 Defending the Driniumor: Covering Force Operations in New Guinea, 1944
It is true that MacArthur's Aitape invasion in April 1944 caught the Japanese totally unprepared, and it is also true that Ultra-derived intelligence revealed to the Allies the Japanese plan of attack against the U.S. covering force along the Driniumor River, about twenty miles east of Aitape.
Aitape was about 200 kilometers east of the major Japanese base at Hollandia, but nearly 650 kilometers west of the nearest Allied ground forces.
The reports, based on extensive Japanese patrolling in the Aitape vicinity, correctly noted that the Aitape airfields were the center of the American position and described a semicircular defensive perimeter about ten kilometers east of the airstrips.

By January 1945 ‘C squadron of the 2/4 Armoured Regiment (AR) had moved up by coastal vessels to the Aitape area and was in reserve at Rocky Point 2/11Btn’s HQ position.
The AIF 6 Division had simultaneously tackled the difficult jungle, amphibiously traversed the coastline and conducted mountain warfare with skill, economy, effectively eliminating the large malaria-ridden Japanese occupying garrison adding to their laurels of desert battles in North Africa.

I am very glad she survived Aitape, otherwise I would not have my lovely wife, but she is not glad at all.

 Australian Military Units
Aitape had been occupied by the Japanese in 1942.
Recaptured by an American landing on 22 April 1944, it was developed as a base area to support the continuing drive towards the Philippines.
Although their primary role was the defence of the base facilities at Aitape, Australian commanders opted to advance to the east of Aitape, towards Wewak, to destroy the remnants of the Japanese 18th Army.

To monitor the aftershocks, three temporary field stations were installed around the lagoon and one permanent seismic station at Aitape to improve earthquake location, estimate the extent and nature of the fault and provide parameters to model the tsunami.
The severe damage and extreme wave heights were confined to a relatively short (30 km) stretch of coast between Aitape and Sissano Villages and specially large along the sandbar the outer margin of Sissano Lagoon.
The anomalous character of the tsunami stems from the combination of extreme run-up in relation to the size of the earthquake, and rapid lateral decay along the shoreline.

Aitape is situated on a rocky headland overlooking the islands of Tunleo and Seleo, halfway along the 400 kilometre coastline between what was then the border of New Guinea and the Sepik River.

The revision and planning for the third phase of the programme, CBSR training for the PNGRCS and affected communities in the Aitape area and beyond is in its final stage.

Later in Aitape he pulled my fat out of the fire (more on that to come.) One thing about the New Guinea nationals (they do not like to be called natives) is that they have very Anglicized first names and more oriental surnames.
On the way into Aitape the pilot, on the intercom, announced that because of rain, the Aitape airfield was closed and we would be landing at Tadji.
All I will say about the Aitape hotel is that it is very nice and very expensive and the nicest thing I can say about the fellow who ran it was that he was a devout capitalist.

 Tidal Wave at Aitape, PNG
A tidal wave, estimated at 10 metres high, struck the beach west of Aitape on a front of about 20 kilometres at 1930 hrs, Friday, 17 July.
The National Disaster Organization has responded quickly and is establishing aid in doctors, nurses, medicines and army teams, with helicopters and aircraft from Australian and PNG sources.

Wrecked as an effective fighting force, its remnants are now straggling back toward Wewak, drifting into the foothills, floundering along jungle trails.

Located to the east of Aitape and Tadji.
The west shore of the river was the American perimeter around Aitape, encompassing the town, harbor and Tadji airfield.
In further attacks during August the Japanese forces around Aitape were thoroughly defeated, and the scattered remnants fled to the east and south to join the main Japanese force between the mouth of the Sepik River and Wewak.

The flood waves were powered by a magnitude seven earthquake centered on the Pacific Ocean seabed close to Aitape, Australian seismologists said.
