Milne Bay was a deep, natural inlet that could harbor a vast number of ships at one time.
When we landed at Aitape we were not there but for a short time in preparation for Morotai.
It was probably the first or second night we were at Aitape that we were awaked by a loud scream by Harold Calkins who panicked and knocked down the tent in which he, and others, were sleeping.

  USS Natoma Bay (CVE-62) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On 25 October, as Natoma Bay, flagship of Rear Admiral Stump, CTU 77.4.2 (“Taffy 2”), cruised off the eastern entrance to Leyte Gulf, the Japanese launched a tri-force offensive to drive the Allies from Leyte, and from the Philippines.
The following morning, 26 October, Natoma Bay’s planes, continuing to pound the enemy, assisted in the sinking of a light cruiser and her accompanying destroyer in the Visayan Sea and then resumed support of ground forces on Leyte.
On the 27th, her fighters strafed Japanese vessels in Ormoc Bay and then swung over Samar where they downed a “Tony” A “Nell” was bagged on the 28th and on the 30th the CVE sailed for Seeadler Harbor, arriving 4 November.

 USS Witter
She arrived in Borgen Bay near Cape Gloucester on 28 April and remained until 1 May when she accompanied TU 34.9.6 to the Russell Islands subgroup of the Solomons.
She departed Humboldt Bay on 15 July and after a brief stop at Cape Cretin, arrived in the northern Solomons at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, on the 18th.
She was anchored in Humboldt Bay until 2 December when she got underway in the escort of a convoy bound for Seeadler Harbor at Manus.

 USS Stevens DD 479 History
After stopovers at Milne Bay and Cape Sudest the destroyers rendezvoused with TG 77.4 off Cape Cretin on 19 April and steamed on to the Hollandia invasion area.
STEVENS arrived in Humboldt Bay on the 21st and made a trip to Maffin Bay and back; then, on 7 September, she stood out of Humboldt Bay for Aitape.
She exited the bay two days later in the screen of the carriers of TF 72 and made for Jinsen, Korea.

The 41st Reconnaissance Troop was to scout along the shores of Humboldt Bay as far as Tami Airstrip, eight miles southeast of Hollandia, and to Imbi Bay and Cape Soedja at the northwestern limits of Humboldt Bay.
H Hour at Tanahmerah Bay was the same as for Humboldt Bay, 0700, and carrier-based aircraft from Task Force 58 were to support the landings of the 24th Division in much the same manner they were to support the 41st Division's assault.
The 24th Division's rehearsal at Taupota Bay, on the coast of New Guinea south of Goodenough Island, was incomplete.

Arleigh A. Burke assumed command of DesRon 23 on 23 October, and the squadron became known as the "Little Beavers." On 1 November, Spence participated in the bombardment of Buka and Bonis airfields and of enemy positions in the Shortland Islands to support the landings at Cape Torokina, Bougainville.
On 5 February, she participated in the bombardment of supply and bivouac areas at Hahela Plantation on the southeast coast of Buka Island.
On the 27th she sortied from Purvis Bay with TF 58 for strikes against Palau, Yap, Ulithi, and Woleai, Caroline Islands.

 USS Natoma Bay (CVE 62)
Instead of NATOMA BAY, the CVE 36 was given to the Royal Navy.
Decommissioned on May 20, 1946, the NATOMA BAY was reclassified CVU 62 on June 12, 1955, and her name was struck from the Navy list on September 1, 1958.
Assigned to the Escort Carrier Group (TG-77.4), NATOMA BAY departed the Admiralties, 12 October, for waters east of the Philippines.

On 7th March 1944 General MacArthur issued instructions for landings to be made at Hollandia and Aitape to exploit the Allied successes in the Admiralty Islands and the growing weakness of the enemy in western New Guinea.
Therefore it was imperative that a simultaneous landing be affected at Aitape 185 kilometres east of Hollandia.
At 7-30am, Sunday morning, the doors of the barges opened and at 12-noon it was strenuous and tiring work but we snatched a few moments in the surf and then wandered off on to the only road that the Japs had in the place.

In Aitape we found our first real evidence of the tsunami wave: 3.5 m runup and inundation to over 150 m inland.
The wave was the smallest further west in the bay, the region protected by a headland.
There was also evidence of large coral bouders that had been moved around by the force of the wave.

Except for scattered sniping, the only Jap opposition was an ineffectual 14-plane torpedo attack on a U.S. destroyer in Hollandia Bay and a single plane bombing of the Jap supply dump, which exploded like a string of firecrackers down two miles of beach.
Aitape and Hollandia were left in the hands of service troops, most of whom quickly retreated to the jungle-robed hills.
Somewhere between Aitape-Hollandia and Madang (which was taken last week by Australian troops) are the remnants of the Japanese Eighteenth Army, reported to be elements of six divisions and one brigade (about 60,000 men).

Stevens arrived in Humboldt Bay on the 21st and made a trip to Maffln Bay and back; then, on 7 September, she stood out of Humboldt Bay for Aitape.
She fueled at Mangarin Bay, Mindoro, that day and got underway with Cleveland (CL 55), Conway (DD-507), and Eaton (DD-510) to support the landings at Iloilo on Panay from 18 to 20 March.
She returned to Subic Bay on the 21st and remained for a week and a day.

On Christmas Eve 1943, Task Force 74 departed once more from Milne Bay, this time for Cape Gloucester, which was reached at first light on Boxing Day, and there took part in the bombardment that preceded the landing by US troops.
WARRAMUNGA, with the other ships of Task Force 74, was assigned to the Tanahmerah Bay operation, and early in the morning of the 22nd commenced the bombardment against previously specified objectives.
The period from this date until the 29th was spent in Humboldt Bay and Seeadler where WARRAMUNGA went alongside USS DOBBIN for a boiler clean and refit, which was completed on the 24th.

She returned to Chesapeake Bay on 11 January 1943 to carry out the last week of shakedown training.

 USS Mobile (CL-63) History in WWII
MOBILE returned to the anchorage at Purvis Bay, Florida Island, after this action; two days later, Cruiser Division 13 and Destroyer Division 49 were directed to proceed to Espiritu Santo and then to rejoining the Tarawa-bound Amphibious Task Force enroute to its objective.
MOBILE departed Okinawa on the morning of 28 May after having undergone an intensive all-night enemy air attack during which she had fired on one surprise attacker which turned away and was shot down a few minutes later by other units.
She arrived at San Pedro Bay in Leyte Gulf on 31 May with availability for much needed repairs and for rest and recreation of the crew.

 DesRon 21 Command History
From 18 April until 12 May the Squadron returned to action with bombardment and gunfire support for the landings at Aitape, New Guinea; by escorting supply vessels to Cape Sudest, Aitape, Humbolt Bay and Tanemerah Bay, and in convoying LSTs and other landing craft to the Russell Islands.
For the next four months the Squadron operated from Subic Bay; in February the ships participated in almost daily bombardment and gunfire support in operations in the Manila Bay area, including bombardment of targets on Southern Bataan and on Corregidor Island.
In April ships covered landings on Carabao Island, off Manila Bay, and from 24 April until 3 May participated with a cruiser force in providing gunfire support, bombardment and coverage of minesweeping operations in the attacks on Tarakan Island, Borneo.

The Embassy of Papua New Guinea staff and their families are saddened by this latest tragedy and are appealing for combined prayers and support for those country-folks affected.
The volcano eruption in Rabaul, cyclone Justin's destruction in the Milne Bay area, and the El Nino-induced drought in most parts of the country, have caused a horrendous burden on the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea.
At present, the Government, with assistance from the Australian and New Zealand Defence forces, are working around the clock to bring relief supplies and medical attention to the affected areas.

The 31st Infantry Division arrived in Oro Bay, New Guinea, 24 April 1944, and engaged in amphibious training prior to entering combat.
Alerted on 25 June 1944 for movement to Aitape, the 124th RCT left Oro Bay and landed at Aitape, New Guinea, 3-6 July 1944.
In mid-August the division began to stage for the Morotai operation, leaving Aitape and Maffin Bay, 11 September 1944.

Close air support operations at Aitape were primarily the responsibility of planes aboard eight CVE's and were similar to the air support activities carried out by Task Force 58 at Hollandia.
It was therefore decided that strafing would begin when the leading boat wave was 4,500 yards from shore (expected to be at H minus 15 minutes) and would end when that wave approached to within 1,200 yards of the shore, timed for about H minus 4 minutes.
The wing moved out of the Aitape area toward the end of May and from the period 25 May to 9 June only the 110th Reconnaissance Squadron, U.S. Fifth Air Force, was stationed at Tadji.

Iowa departed Norfolk en route to the Caribbean on 9 January 1987 and on the 10th participated in exercise BLASTEX 1-87.
She arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for Operational Readiness Inspection on 11 February and departed 13 February en route for gunnery exercises at Vieques Island, Puerto Rico.
It was noted on the air in that era by shortwave listeners in the United States, New Zealand and Australia with the callsign, NCBL.

 HMAS WARRAMUNGA (I) - HMA Ship Histories (Sea Power Centre - Australia)
Having returned to Milne Bay from this duty, WARRAMUNGA sailed for Sydney for a boiler clean and refit, leaving there on 29 October with the newly arrived HMAS SHROPSHIRE for Brisbane, where the remainder of the Australian Squadron was lying.
The Task Force sailed on 14 April 1944 for Seeadler Harbour, in the Admiralties, and on the 19th departed to rendezvous with the attack force for the forthcoming operations at Tanahmerah Bay, Humboldt Bay and Aitape.
She departed Sydney on 9 July for Subic Bay with Commodore Collins (Commodore Commanding Australian Squadron) on board, and was in Subic Bay when Japan’s acceptance of the peace terms was announced.

In April 1944, MacArthur decided to push 250 miles to the northwest of Finschafen, and seize the coastal area at Hollandia and Aitape.
At dawn April 22, amphibious forces landed on the shores of Humbolt Bay and Tanahmerah Bay with little or no opposition.
In late November, the Coronado and San Pedro left Humbolt Bay, to steam the 1,250 miles to escort a convoy of ships bringing supplies and men to Leyte.

Presumably this mammoth wave resulted from the distinct configuration of the coast, in particular the shoreline topography, which channelled the water along a narrow bay.
But Bryant and others argue the 7.1 magnitude earthquake was too small to be responsible for the 15m wave that swept 500m inland at Aitape.
The earthquake that caused the catastrophic Boxing Day tsunamis was hardly felt in Indonesia, and not at all in Sri Lanka, yet the water displacement caused by the driving of the Indian plate beneath the Burma plate created waves that killed people on the east African coast almost 5000km away.
