Aitkin County was established in 1857 as Aiken County and had a spelling change of its name to the current spelling in 1872.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.90% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 21.60% from 25 to 44, 29.10% from 45 to 64, and 23.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Aitkin County's assistant land manager, Mark Jacobs, is responsible for making sure loggers live up to the requirements of the well-managed forest certification.

Stevens County responded on June 3 that, while the plan was not necessarily the one that made populations most equal, it did meet the ten-percent requirement, did not require any commissioners to run against each other, and was the will of the majority of the elected officials responsible for drawing the plan.
County Commissioner Joanne Fay challenged the county plan based on her assertion that the plan did not comply with the requirement of Minn. Stat.
The court issued a writ of mandamus commanding the county board to adopt a new plan that complied with the law within 30 days and instructing it to compute the ten percent population variance by adding the variation of the largest district to the variation of the smallest district.

The Aitkin County herd has been held under quarantine since Aug. 30, when CWD was detected in a single adult male elk.
The only confirmed case of CWD in Minnesota was the single male elk that died on the Aitkin County farm.
In addition to the Aitkin County herd being tested by Board of Animal Health, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is testing wild deer culled within a nine-square-mile area surrounding the farm.

Dan Amman Sat Jul 12 12:38:00 1997 I am trying to locate a Hill City newspaper article about the marriage of my grandparents: Albert Lewis Brown and Elisa Margaret Frederick, who were married in Duluth on 16 June 1922, but who supposedly came back to Hill City for a reception (their families resided there).
Aitkin County on 10/11/1924 to the parents of Lloyd Walter Morton and Ella Mabel Anderson Morton.
Mary died 3/6/40 in Duluth, MN and was buried next to husband in Hill Lake (Aitkin County).

A related factor was the formation of the Aitkin County Forest Advisory Committee, and similar committees in adjacent counties, as part of the out of court settlement of a Trus Joist MacMillan lawsuit.
In addition, the existence of valuable hardwood resources in the Aitkin and Hill City Areas, and a concern about diminishing white pine resources in this area prompted DNR Forestry in Region 3 to focus hardware and personnel resources in this area that were unusual for Area Forestry offices in DNR.
Closer scrutiny suggested to all involved that it would be appropriate to apply for forest management certification for all the public forest lands in the County, and Minnesota DNR Forestry made a decision to join the County and apply for its own certification.
