Shiga Prefectural Government, the local consumer cooperative and private-sector companies in the prefecture jointly developed a technology to produce diesel by adding methanol and catalysts to waste cooking oil.
Aito Town on the eastern coast of Lake Biwa in 1995 became the first local entity in the country to build a diesel fuel producing plant using the technology.
Shiga Prefecture's initiative for using rapeseeds oil and waste cooking oil as automotive fuel is spreading all over the country in a visible way.

Studies on the value of the Japanese people point out that the tendencies of retreat of the traditional ie-consciousness and increase of orientation toward leisure are seen since the Showa 30's(1955-64) and a greater emphasis on private life is also observed.
The consequences of this study on the consciousness of residents of Aito-cho, Shiga Prefecture show similar tendencies in that they are losing the traditional consciousness in general and the tendency of pursuing private values has developed.

This small jar was excavated in 1951 from the "heart stone" foundation of the five-story pagoda remains of the Shakazan Hyakusaiji temple in AitoOchoO, Echigun, Shiga Prefecture.
Further, reports on the excavation of the pagoda site reveal that this pot was unearthed from the top layer of burned soil, and thus it is thought that this pot was excavated from the heart-stone site of the five-storied pagoda built between the years 1498 and 1503.
He viewed the excavated materials and he stated that this was a major find unparalleled in recent years and he would plan to publish them in scholarly circles in the near future.

With the establishment of the Town and Village Consolidation Promotion Law in October 1953, towns and villages in the area were consolidated into one city, five towns, and one village (the Great Consolidation of the Showa period).
Aito Village was later incorporated as a town on February 11, 1971.
On February 11, 2005, one city (Yokaichi) and four towns (Eigenji, Gokasho, Aito, and Koto) were consolidated into Higashiomi City, which was subsequently expanded when it merged with the towns of Gamo and Notogawa on January 1, 2006.

The Aito Eco-plaza is equipped with a plant to refine bio-diesel fuel (BDF) as well as a plant in which rice hulls produced from paddy fields are processed and mixed with oil cake generated after extracting rapeseeds, to create a soil conditioner.
This facility produces eco-friendly bio-diesel fuel by recycling waste cooking oil (used tempura oil) produced from households of ordinary citizens of Kyoto City as raw material.
