WALLACE, ROBERT S.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among these major lineages of the Aizoaceae, representative samples of Aizoon, Tetragonia, and Sesuvium were examined together with numerous samples from the "Mesembryanthemum" group, including taxa from both subfamilies Mesembryanthemoideae and Ruschioideae.
Relative to outgroups from the Phytolaccaceae and Nyctaginaceae, the Aizoaceae were found to be monophyletic.
The evolutionary relationships among the four major intrafamilial lineages (subfamilies) is examined with special reference to character changes in floral and fruit morphology and the evolution of succulence and xeromorphic adaptations in the Aizoaceae.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Caryophyllidae -- Spring 1999
The distinction between the Aizoaceae and Mesembryanthemaceae is fairly substantial.
The ovary of Aizoaceae is predominately superior while that of the Mesembryanthemaceae is half-inferior to inferior.
The family is clearly related to Aizoaceae and Didiereaceae, and appears to be comfortably at home in the Portulacineae.

 Aizoaceae (= Mesembryanthemaceae; vygies)
The Aizoaceae is interpreted here in the broad sense to include the mesems and follows the relatively recent conclusions of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998).
The reasoning behind combining the mesems in the Aizoaceae is that evidence suggests that they are derived from this family and to keep them in a separate family would make them paraphyletic.
In the classification below, this family is relegated to 2 subfamilies under the Aizoaceae: the Mesembryanthemoideae and the Ruschioideae.

ILLUSTRATED HANDBOOK OF SUCCULENT PLANTS - 2 VOLUMES AIZOACEAE
With Jacobsen's succulent lexicon of the 1950s impressed firmly on my mind I was expecting a state of the art, full colour, fully updated, expanded and rewritten reference work to replace the third volume of his opus.
Jacobsen's third volume covered the Mesembryanthemaceae, but these two volumes embrace the wider subject, Aizoaceae and include plants which the majority of us would not wish to grow, neither would the plants be suitable for the majority of our conditions.
My first disappointment was that the volumes were not in slip cases; given that they are reference works, it would have added to their longevity and at £83.50 they should have been.

Aizoaceae in Flora of North America @ efloras.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Aizoaceae have been considered by some authors (e.g., F. Pax and K. Hoffmann 1960) to include the Molluginaceae.
Some genera of Aizoaceae have wide-ranging species (e.g., members of Trianthema and Sesuvium), which are thought to be bird- and water-dispersed and are associated with moist habitats.

(Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), low-growing annual plant, of the carpetweed family (Aizoaceae) and one of about 75 species commonly called fig-marigolds, constituting the genus Mesembryanthemum.
The order Caryophyllales includes plants ranging from garden subjects and vegetables to bizarre succulent plants that resemble stones.
The most striking single ecological feature in the order is the dominance of the Chenopodiaceae in alkaline situations and the prominence of succulent Aizoaceae in the deserts of southern Africa.
