Aizuwakamatsu is in the northeast of the Aizu district of Fukushima, and is the main city of that district.
Merchant houses and warehouses in the old town stand alongside modern buildings, and the town is carrying out a renovation to make the most of its appearance.
Also, Aizuwakamatsu is one of Japan's main sake (rice wine) centers, famous for the fine taste of sake made with melted snow from the Iide-Asahi Mountain Range.
