Forget for a moment the album's surreal sonic perfection, its melodic and harmonic complexity - music so technically demanding its creators had to call in A-list session players to realize the sounds they heard in their heads but could not play, even on the instruments they had mastered.
Drummer Paul Humphrey's upstroke during the beginning of "Black Cow," the 1977 album's languid opener, is so hesitant, so world-weary that it barely catches up to the pulse he sets with his foot.
Aja's extended tracks achieve their power through a dynamic dance: Mellow, stark passages (which drew a blueprint for "smooth jazz" radio) are offset by obsessively dense musicianship, stacks of notes that grasp at euphoria.

Sneaking onto the charts a half-decade earlier with sinuous, jazz-inflected "rock", the dysfunctional duo's acerbic, anti-heroic visions had been critically lauded for their band identity and killer guitar riffs, then promptly challenged when the two songwriters retired from the road, dissolved any formal band lineup, and used the studio as laboratory.
Aja carried the added indignity of its increased focus on sophisticated jazz models and musicianship, which carried the Dan's ambitions even further in terms of suave harmonies, intricate song structures, and brilliant playing.

Metal Leg 16 - "The Fall of Steely Dan"
Though these questions are unanswerable, they point to the problematic nature of "Aja," an album whose lyrics are preoccupied with home and with where (if anywhere) one belongs.
Consider, for instance, their all-out attack on the concept of freedom, that rallying cry of pop music and youth culture in the '60s which was amplified by an expanding economy and the baby-boom generation's strength in numbers.
And "Aja," their most jazz-like album to date, fails because it cannot overcome, try though it might, a distance it mostly pretends not to recognize.

Album Review: If you somehow missed the news that the album Aja is Steely Dan's finest effort, I'm hear to say it plainly: It is without question their topper.
Aja is a masterpiece of studiocraft, with production qualities to please the pickiest audiophile, and with songwriting and playing so good that they propelled Steely Dan into the stratosphere of rock stardom in the late 1970s.
Aja was the album where Steely Dan perfected the slick jazz-rock sound they had been moving toward, and because their creative juices were peaking at the time, the result was a set of seven songs that is nearly without flaw.

Steely Dan : Aja - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records.
But Aja isn't just about texture, since Becker and Fagen's songs are their most complex and musically rich set of songs -- even the simplest song, the sunny pop of "Peg," has layers of jazzy vocal harmonies.
It's complex music delivered with ease, and although the duo's preoccupation with clean sound and self-consciously sophisticated arrangements would eventually lead to a dead end, Aja is a shining example of jazz-rock at its finest.

It's difficult to beat Aja in my book, and while Gaucho is a continuation of development, it doesn't reach Aja's heights.
Like Aja, the songs are longer and a whole host of special guest, including Patti Austin, Randy Brecker, Mark Knopfler, and David Sanborn.
Gaucho was Steely Dan's last album, though Donald Fagan's subsequent disks have similar themes, and even Becker as guests, and there is growing rumor and plans of a NEW Steely Dan album, but it seems to be taking a bit to get it together.

Although it was immaculately recorded, I don't think there are many Dan fans who believed the overall quality of the album was quite up there with any of the previous six classics.
There is no doubt that the three previous albums -- Katy Lied, Royal Scam and Aja -- would all benefit from a 5.1 surround remastering for SACD.
Gaucho often gets lost in the shuffle as it followed Aja, but it is every bit a good as that album and ranks right up there with anything this great band has released.

In the new light of the 2000 release of "Two Against Nature" Steely Dan's previously considered final album now deserves re-evaluation.Following on from the critically acclaimed and near perfection of "Aja" Donald Fagen and Walter Becker found themselves under enormous pressure now they were back in New York (mostly) to record the follow up.
Personal and contractual problems aside there appears to be a slight uneasy atmosphere permeating the whole album from the opening attack of electric piano on the favourite to be "Babylon Sisters" on track one to the haunting guitar fills at the fadeout of "Third World Man" that closes the album.
