I stumbled upon Ajattara very much by chance right as their debut album was released to very little ado on Spinefarm Records.
Ajattara actually comes from the Finnish name of the âforestâ“spirit,â so I guess thatâs what they were going for.
The band was completely unique and while I liked it from the start, is truly has a summery vibe that has allowed it to dominate my CD player as of late.
Ajattara is an atmospheric fl/death/doom metal band from Finland.
The band got its name from the Ajattara (or Ajatar) of Finnish mythology, which is an evil forest spirit.
Ruoja is actually Pasi Koskinen, ex-singer of Amorphis and singer of Shape of Despair, singer/guitarist of To Separate the Flesh from the Bones and ex-singer/guitarist of St.Mucus.
This band takes fl metal and infuses it with a sensitivity and sensibility that is sorely needs, and if this is just the start of greater things to come, then appreciate the fact that you’re standing on the brink of something very special indeed.
Being a young band and only two albums into what could be a very promising career, ‘Swanlike’ as a whole probably fails to live up to the standards set on it’s first four opening tracks.
Their live debut would be something most bands could only dream of as in November 2002 in the one weekend they played to over 400 people on the first gig.
Despite that minor, but unfortunate, incident the band seemed to be in a really deadly shape on the stage, basically concentrating on playing songs off their impressive new album CROWNED IN TERROR.
The band played almost an hour and I honestly have to admit that at one point it all sounded to me like they repeated only one of their songs over and over again as their blasting full-out, all-deafen blitzkrieg-ish Thrash attack simply made you numb and breathless so to speak.
The band's main man better known as the Amorphis vocalist definitely has a wide range of voice skills to handle songs from melodic tunes to an extreme grim Black Metal stuff.

It all started in the year 1996, when Ruoja finally started making his dream true - He wanted also to compose and make more brutal music, like Ajattara is. They released their first demo, named "Helvetissä on syntisen taivas" (Sinner´s heaven is in Hell) in 1998.
They hit Savonlinna´s Sundicoop Studios to record an album - The resort was "Itse"-album, and that was a success.
Ajattara creates a world of emotions where every sound and every word tears apart even the most devoted selfdenier who will not let aggression caress his cortex.
Special heed must be given to Ajattara's lyrics, remarkable for being cliché-free and poetic, yet disturbing and haunting as only a bad dream arising from deep dank soil of the local woodlands can be.
As with those who partake of the flesh of gods, the listeners of Ajattara will never be quite the same again.
Now Ajattara’s fourth coming is at hand, and this time they have given birth to an Äpäre (“bastard child”).
The way Kari sings on the earlier releases is Heaven to the ears, she is not with the band any longer, but you be the judge.
This band combines the music of The Cult and the singing style of Type O Negative, a dash of this and a spritz of that, and you have some very interesting gothic rock for those days you don't feel like banging your head (if there is such a day, of course).
Not having been a fan of this band for long, it's my understanding that they have been around a long time and have gone through their fair share of vocalists.
Few finnish bands that use their own language in order to convince us with their music have in my opinion been successful, but the bandAjattara is an exception.
If there is any problem concerning Ajattara it must be that it sometimes tends to be a bit to much transportation in the music.
Some parts certainly are but all in all it's a quite similar album from a band that doesn't have any difficulties to catch my attention.
AJATTARA recently issued their third album, "Tyhjyys" ("Emptiness") through through the Spinefarm Records subsidiary Spikefarm.

Though I find a few bands that I listen to regularly, none have compared to the excellent music that Ajattara delivers.
Ajattara has ace rhythmical qualities, which are accompanied by unique and captivating counter-melodies.
The vocals, which make Ajattara the "perfect" fl metalband, are not screeched or squealed.
