  Ajo Community Information
Once a copper mining community, Ajo became a retirement community in the 1980s and, although Phelps Dodge periodically considers opening the mine again, remains a quiet town with more people picking up social security checks than there are kids taking home report cards from the school.

Ajo is landlocked with the Tohono O'odham Nation to the east, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to the south, and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and Goldwater Gunnery Range to the north and west.
