 Jeru the Damaja
Inspired and influenced by the sounds of the emerging hip-hop scene taking place on his neighborhood streets, Brooklyn native Kendrick Jeru Davis was making his own attempts at writing and reciting by the age of ten.
It was during this time he started to collaborate with the duo Gang Starr, who had relocated to New York towards the end of the 1980s; ultimately, it was his appearance on the track I'm The Man from the 1992 Gang Starr album Daily Operation that would break him to a national hip-hop audience.
Jeru's debut full-length The Sun Rises in the East was issued through Payday in 1994, featuring production work from Gang Starr's DJ Premier; the album received good critical notices and was given an enthusiastic response from the hip-hop underground, further consolidating the reputation the rapper had established with Come Clean.

Kendrick Jeru Davis, aka Jeru the Damaja, is among the last holdouts against this rash of self-exposure.
Since neither of Jeru's albums--1994's The Sun Rises in the East and last year's Wrath of the Math, both issued by Payday/FFRR--dabbles in autobiographical specifics, the rapper's closed-mouth policy keeps him cloaked in mystery, and that's just the way he likes it.
But what lifts the recordings still higher are Jeru's words, which refuse to capitulate to the greed-and-blood ethic popularized by the Death Row axis on the West Coast and the Wu Tang Clan on the other side of the continent.

 cityofsound: Music Archives
Given that many of these systems rely on accurate metadata, aka contextual information around music, it's surprising how little flexibility or accuracy or general importance is attributed to metadata itself.
The best example of this is explored most thoroughly by Wayne Bremser's brilliant essay at harlem.org, in which he illustrates the paucity of metadata in an average mp3 file, or the iTunes application in which it is experienced, as compared to the average vinyl jazz album of the mid-20th century.
The genre may or may not be there, and may or may not be at all useful - on another piece, it could be 'World' for instance, which is particularly unhelpful; 'Jazz' will be applied equally to Kenny G and Derek Bailey, despite the obvious chasm.
