As I drove southbound, I was circumnavigating the island in a clockwise fashion, a few short miles from Akaka Falls there is a bypass that touts itself as a scenic route near the Onomea Bay.

Also in the park, we visited the Jagger Museum, named after the scientist who was behind the volcano observatory next door.
We took the tour to Waipi'o Valley (not listed on the current schedule), and an irregular tour to the "Boiling Pots" and a lava tube just outside Hilo on the saddle road (a trip to Mauna Kea was cancelled due to fog, and the driver asked where we'd like to go instead).
