In the real world, Richard Garriott (born in Britain but raised in the United States) acquired the nickname "Lord British" as a teenager from older students in his school who claimed he spoke with a British accent.
Garriott released early games, such as Akalabeth, under the name and occasionally appeared in Ultima Online playing as Lord British.

Swofford's opinion was that because most of the people attending the faire were UO fans-- not Ultima fans, hardly anyone knew what an Akalabeth was, and he was kind of disappointed that the price was so low (it WAS for charity, after all).
The Akalabeth came with a COA--saying, that "this version was assembled in his mother's kitchen in Houston, Texas in 1980." It is signed by Richard Garriott HIMSELF (and Lord British :)), but the date at the bottom says November 2nd, 2000.
