Akaroa is a town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand.
In summer the temporary population can reach 7000 which places stress on the water supply which is entirely dependent upon rainfall on the hills.
Although sailors from the hastily-despatched HMS Britomart proclaimed British sovereignty over the South Island at Akaroa in 1840, the area was settled that same year by French settlers who had intended to establish a colony.

The original Akaroa lighthouse started operation on the precipitous headland of Akaroa Heads on 1 January 1880.
The foundations are all that remain of the lighthouse keeper’s family homes, but the original stonework of the supply road down to Haylocks Bay remains along the cliff face, including an original stone culvert at the junction of the road and the small stream.
The lighthouse building and equipment was granted to Akaroa Lighthouse Preservation Society, who moved the tower in sections, to Cemetery Point, Akaroa Town (now known as Lighthouse Point).

There were some eighty European settlers at Akaroa and on Banks Peninsula in those times and a reported number of around five hundred Maori living in the Canterbury district, their numbers reduced by the civil wars of 1820 and raids led by Rauparaha in 1830, when Kaiopoi was sacked and destroyed.
By March, 1840, Major Thomas Bunbury was in Akaroa to gather signitaries for the Treaty from the chiefs of the Ngai Tahu tribe and in August, Captain Stanley, sailing in the warship HMS Britomart formally raised the British Union Jack flag at Akaroa.
By 1844, the farms occupied by the French settlers at Akaroa boasted 430 pigs, 400 sheep, 40 cows and two horses.
