 Encyclopedia: Upper Hutt
The city is 30 km north-east of Wellington, and is centred on the upper (northern) valley of the Hutt River, which flows north-east to south-west on its way to its outflow into Port Nicholson harbour.
In the 1970s and 1980s, a stop bank was built alongside the eastern side of the river from northern Upper Hutt to the mouth of the Hutt River in Lower Hutt to prevent further flooding.
Tauranga (population 90,906 — 2001 census) is the major city of the western Bay of Plenty on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

River access is at the courtesy of the landowners and is not a "right".
The river is closed upstream of the Tararua Forest park in winter, and no access is permitted in the city water catchment area.
The river is open all year round; browns averaging 2-3 lbs and rainbows 1-2lbs are present, with the occasional brown up to 5lb.

The Makuri River, a tributary of the Tiraumea River, is east of Pahiatua and flows in a westerly direction.
The source of the Tiraumea River is in the sandstone/mudstone hill country east of Pahiatua and flows in a northerly direction to join the Manawatu River near Woodville.
Access is either at the Hutt River confluence, where there is public access along the river to the West Akatarawa River, or, off the Akatarawa Road upstream of this junction from which, landowner permission is required both to and along the river.

Six rivers in the northern Wairarapa - Pahiatua region are graphed daily (on monthly graphs) at this Pahiatua website using MRC data.
Lowland sections of rivers generally take up to three days to become fishable after a major flood event, however, upper sections at the forest park boundaries can be fishable within hours of the levels beginning to drop.
Although the gravel river beds are broad, fish will often be lying in a few cm of water within half a rod length of the bank.

It follows the Waikato River to Huntly, piggybacks on the existing Hakarimata Walkway to Ngaruawahia, then cleaves again to the riverbank to reach Hamilton.
The choice then exists to canoe the river to Wanganui city, or to walk the isolated river road.
But we have included also walks that are in the planning stages, though not yet in place, or others that are not planned but are, given the land status, very possible.

 Your Place - Soils near river beds....
I'm not an expert, but conventional wisdom suggests that if you buy the land, you'd be wise to leave those willows alone as they're likely to provide you with some erosion protection in the event of a flood - not to mention shade for your stock if they're on the right side of the fence.
It doesn't appear that there's been any recent river rising, even up to the willows, as the soil isn't terribly sandy/silty there, as it is in the actual (dry) riverbed.
Kayakers keep a close eye on the river levels up there as a couple of the rivers can only be paddled when in flood (sounds crazy I know, but the upper Ashley in flood is a great paddle!!!).

For 13 years Wellington's Akatarawa Valley has hosted the Karapoti Classic, a rugged single loop race that is rapidly gaining cult status to the extent that American magazine VeloNews list it as one of the top 25 races in the world.
For a second it is perfectly still, then the gun and suddenly the river erupts in a spasm of flailing knees and writhing bikes as riders sprint for the other side.
Across the river, they raced up the muddy bank, clogging their cleats nice and early, dropped their bikes to the ground and vanished into the rugged ranges not to be seen again for three, four, five, even six hours.

The reason is simple; an uncompromising yet exhilarating and achievable 50km of 4WD trails, gnarly single track, wheel sucking sludge, raging river crossings, wall to wall wilderness and huge hills that'll have you grinding a granny ring up and grinning like a good on the way down.
From there you climb away from the Akatarawa River for 3km.
It is illegal to park on the east side of the road and vehicles that do may be towed.

A high bridge carried the line over a tributary river immediately on leaving the sawmill and it then descended slowly along the east bank until crossing the river on a low trestle then climbed continually along a sidling on the west bank throughout its length.
There is no bridge at the first river crossing and it's necessary to paddle across but it's shallow and no trouble.
The line then carries on up river clinging to rock faces, crossing the river on two wooden truss bridges, traversing another turntable and finally arrives at a sylvan terminal, deep in the mountain range, near the now unoccupied caretakers house.
