Akebono was a long lived and strong yokozuna, lasting nearly eight years in the rank and winning the top division championship on a further eight occassions.
Akebono was one of the tallest sumo wrestlers ever, at 203 cm (6ft 8in) tall, and also one of the heaviest with a fighting weight around 235 kg.

After Akebono's ozeki promotion in May 1992, the key question was, "Will he make it to yokozuna?" While we pondered over this, he had a heart-breaking toe injury forcing him to delay his ozeki debut by skipping the July 1992 tournament in Nagoya.
Akebono's road to yokozuna was first paved by Takamiyama who from the 1960s popularized the idea of foreign sumoists in Japan and became the first foreigner to win a tournament (July 1972).

Akebono, who has been using his ring name even after retirement in 2001 under a special rule for yokozuna, could not afford the vast sums needed to obtain "toshiyori-meiseki," or the right to stay with the Japan Sumo Association after retirement as a sumo elder.

Akebono performed a special Yokozuna Dohyo-Iri at the opening ceremony of the Nagoya winter olympics in 1998.
Plagued by injuries (mainly to his knees), Akebono would go on to win his 7th (March, 1994), 8th (March, 1995) and 9th (May, 1997) yusho in this period, but was only rarely capable of sustaining his characteristic dominance in the ring through the final days of the basho.
Born on Samoa and raised on Hawaii this strong and heavy rikishi followed in the footsteps of Akebono to become the second foreign born Yokozuna.
