The Real-Life Akechi Mitsuhide of Tamba   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Akechi Mitsuhide always thought that Toyotomi's humble origins (he's the son of a farmer, and didn't have samurai blood in his veins) should have kicked the man out of business a long time ago; he thought that Oda Nobunaga was so careless about picking up his men (excluding, of course, himself).
Akechi was also in a sort of cold war with the only one in Oda's household who was closest to the boss; Oda's valet Mori Ranmaru (click here for pictures and why he was no ordinary serviceperson).
Akechi -- like virtually every sript-scribbler of Japanese animation movies today -- believed that fighting against the monks (albeit their being warriors, and that they never observed the Buddhist rules) was an unpardonable sin, let alone killing them all and destroying their lair.

He gave specific orders to the Akechi clan's scouts to kill everybody on their way, nevermind that they were only farmers and such, that used to rise at dawn everyday.
Akechi Mitsuhide planned to kill him, too, and he had to keep the biz in total hush-hush because Tokugawa always had a ninja corps around him anywhere he went to.
Fire, lit by Akechi soldiers, had spread to the innermost chambers of the Honno temple, and the bodies of Oda's minimum escort, the monks, the apprentices and lay-priests of the Honno temple, Oda's African slave, the younger Mori brothers (all were under 15 years old), were testimonies of this no-way-out situation.

He met and defeated the forces of Akechi Mitsuhide at the Battle of Yamazaki and afterwards took a prominent part in the 'Kiyosu Conference' to nominate Nobunaga's successor.
When Akechi Mitsuhide killed Oda Nobunaga in June 1582, Junkei seemed ready to assist him, but waited at the Battle of Yamazaki to see who would win and once Toyotomi Hideyoshi had the upper hand, Junkei attacked the Akechi.

One of these armies however, under Akechi Mitushide, attacked Nobunaga himself and he was killed on 20 June 1582 at the Honno Temple in Kyoto.
Hideyoshi's noteworthy avenging of the Honnoji assassination allowed him to play a major role a few months later in the hotly contested 'Kiyosu Conference', where, rather than resolving the issue of Nobunaga's successor, the Oda domain was parceled up among its chief retainers.
Following Nobunaga’s murder at the hands of Akechi Mitushide in June 1582, Ieyasu, who narrowly escaped sharing the same fate, retreated to Mikawa and later availed of Mitushide’s defeat in the Battle of Yamazaki to grab the provinces of Kai and Shinano.

One of those party-nights, General Akechi was in charge of everything to make Tokugawa felt at home (or rather felt at a much-better home!), and he blew it.
It was one of the myriad personal grievances Akechi kept piggybanking until the fateful morning when he led his entire Army to attack Oda who was, in contrast, accompanied by no more than twenty people.
This is a usual irony, but it was the 32 years-old Oda Nobunaga who took the homeless, jobless 38 years-old Akechi Mitsuhide in, when the man came to the Oda castle of Gifu with nothing whatsoever but the clothes he was wearing.
