In 1566 Mitsuhide is supposed to have acted as a messenger for the 'wandering shôgun' Yoshiaki, and thereafter served Nobunaga.
Mitsuhide proved himself a capable general and in 1571 was awarded Sakamoto-jo and two districts in Ômi province.
Mitsuhide had counted on the support of Hosokawa Fujitaka, with whom he was related to through marriage.

Mitsuhide was a general under daimyo Oda Nobunaga, although he later betrayed Nobunaga and caused him to commit seppuku.
Mitsuhide is rumored to have been killed by a peasant warrior with a bamboo spear by the name of Nakamura (some say such an ignominious death was but karmic reward for killing his lord).

The protagonist, Samanosuke, is a fictional nephew to Akechi Mitsuhide (Akechi is the surname), the man historically credited to have actually killed Oda Nobunaga over 20 years later.
Some say nephew or cousin to Mitsuhide, others say brother-in-law, not much is said about Hidemitsu/Samanosuke, just that he helped Mitsuhide in the attack on Nobunaga, and lived somewhat longer than Mitsuhide, there is also a mystery to his death, it was either seppuku, or died in battle against Hideyoshi's troops.
