  Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Society Museum
The Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Museum is located on Main Street immediately behind the large statue of Paul Bunyan.
The Museum was opened in 1984 and contains an interesting collection of pictures and artifacts portraying the early Akeley history when the largest sawmill in the state was located here and the population was between 3,000 and 4,000.
It is interesting to work there, one can learn about Akeley's early history which is quite rich and colorful, and many interesting people from around the country, and also foreign countries, visit the Museum.

Akeley specialized in African mammals, particularly the gorilla and the elephant.
In 1909 Akeley accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on an expedition to Africa and began working at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where his efforts can still be seen in the Akeley African Hall.
Akeley died of a fever in the Congo during his fifth expedition to Africa.

Akeley had a church in 1164 which came under the living of Longueville Abbey, but a later church, St. James the Apostle, was built in 1854.
This parish, by the name of Akeley cum Shockholt, was inclosed, pursuant to an act of parliament passed in 1794, when a corn rent was settled on the rector in lieu of tithes, but the Marquis of Salisbur's estate was exempted from the operation of the act.
Akeley was noted for its Lace industry and had a large school where children were taught pillow lacemaking.

Akeley was a dedicated explorer, taxidermist, sculptor, and photographer who led teams of scientists and artists on several expeditions to Africa during the first two decades of this century.
Akeley, however, began by re-creating the animal's shape with an armature made of wood, wire, and sometimes parts of the actual skeleton.
While we have learned a great deal about mammals and their world since Akeley's day, and we no longer collect animal specimens as Akeley did, his vision and his desire to preserve the world he lived in still inform much of the work done at the Museum.

The city of Akeley was incorporated on December 30, 1916.
It was developed on large tracts of timber land that had been surveyed by Thomas Barlow Walker in 1876 and purchased by him and Akeley a short time later; their Red River Lumber Company began in 1893.
Plummer was born in Indiana in 1851, came with his family to Minnesota in 1855 and to Akeley Township in 1894; the name changed to the present spelling in 1927.
