So, AKERCOCKE tore themselves away from their isolation in late ’97 (I think) when the Filth played at the LA2 and we wandered backstage to meet these fellows.
We decided rather early on that although we were playing metal music, we shouldn’t pretend to be some sort of metal purists and adopt jeans and t-shirts just to perform, as that would be acting.
AKERCOCKE only appeared live for a few performances in the next six months, as we concentrated on making the best record that we could, and Martin and Jason set about the painstaking mixing process.

Like, say, Gehenna, Akercocke’s newest work for Peaceville is disturbingly real, where succinct musicianship and unique songwriting concepts converge with stylized satanic lyrics and artwork.
In many ways, Akercocke’s music resembles Nile’s Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka - the riff structure, multi-headed vocal (screams, roars, bellows) assault and Stygian melodic underpinnings are evoked in similar fashion of their American counterparts.
Akercocke just might sound like a bastard child of Nile, Gehenna and early Cradle Of Filth, but these British perverts are tight-lipped to reveal the specifics of their origin.

Akercocke, at the core, are violent and ripping death metal which draws fl metal comparisons via the kinds of atmospheres the riffs create and the passing similarities one can detect to Cradle of Filth's _The Principle of Evil Made Flesh_ (which, though primarily regarded as a fl metal record, is certainly strongly death metal influenced).
Furthermore, Akercocke do not merely blast it out with the best, they also incorporate searing noise/industrial elements into songs and interludes and thus succeed in adding a fresh dimension to their extreme metal base.
Akercocke have produced a dark, distinctive and somewhat original record; they have been let down slightly by production as many unsigned bands are, but their talent and potential shine through and make _RotBN_ the best release from an unsigned band I have heard this year.

Akercocke is the sophisticated, deadly incarnation of this swanlike anime fighting style, and with Antichrist, they continue their blasphemously refined metallic tradition in usual cultivated fashion.
Perhaps not their finest release yet, as some of it is sublime and other parts are pedestrian, however there’s nothing to scoff at or ignore if you already love this band despite the lack of surprise factor in this instance.
It’s simply a new Akercocke album, and even though this exceptional group may not have set new standards of quality for themselves, this is still a criminally overlooked endeavor that slays a great portion of canned fl and death metal out there today.
