The work on turning AkershusCastle into a bastion-fortress complete with ramparts and mouts began during the 1580s, and continued at full speed into the beginning of the 17th Century.
Largely for defensive reasons, the town of Oslo was moved closer to the fortress in 1624, thereby changing the functions of the fortress to that of a citadel on the Italian model, with city and fortress as one unit, with the same outer wall.
AkershusCastle itself was rebuilt into a renaissance castle.

Akershus Slott og Festning (Akershus Castle & Fortress) | Museum/Attraction Review | Oslo | Frommers.com(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Akerhus Festning dates back to 1299 when it was built as a castle and royal residence.
Akershusfortress and castle (Akershusfestning og slott).
Built by King Hakon V háleggr (longlegs) in the 1300s, this fortress and castle overlooking the city centre is one of the best-preserved medieval buildings of this type in Europe.
As you wander around the castle you'll find tiny rooms where outcast nobles were kept, in stark contrast to the far more elaborate dining halls and staterooms on the upper floors.
The castle and fortress were built in 1300 and reconstructed several times after many attacks (including the 1563-70 War of the North).
Akershus was one of the sturdiest castles in northern Europe.
After the war ended on 8 May 1945 Fehmer made an unsuccessful dash for freedom, fleeing towards Sweden but he was arrested by Norwegian police officers.
He was sentenced to death for his many atrocities and was shot at Akershusfestning on 16 March 1948.
Originally built as a castle in 1299, AkershusFestning was later developed into a city fortress.
The original AkershusCastle is located inside the fortress.
At the Information Centre, there is an exhibition on the history of the fortress, and guided tours depart from here each day between May and September at 10a, noon, 2pm and 4pm.
is centrally located in a quiet area of Oslo, close to AkershusFestning and Aker Pier.
After a long day, you have the opportunity to enjoy a refreshment in the jacuzzi on the roof terrace, where you can also take in the view of the beautiful Oslo Harbour and the ancient "AkershusFestning".
The hotel consists of 51 double rooms and 18 suites - all of them with elegant and tasteful decorations from the well known Norwegian company Hødnebø, with original paintings by the artist Corrine Haram.
Within AkershusCastle is the Museum of the Norwegian Resistance (Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum), illustrating the activities of the Norwegian resistance during the Second World War.
There is a monument commemorating the resistance fighters who were executed in Akershus.
