  Akhaltsikhe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is situated on the both banks of a small river Potskhovi, which separates the city to the old city in the north and new in the south.
In 1576 the Ottomans took it and from 1628 the city became the centre of Akhaltsikhe Province.
In 1828, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829, Russian troops under the command of General Paskevich captured the city and, as a consequence of the 1829 Treaty of Adrianople (Edirne), it was ceded to the Russian Empire as part of first Kutaisi and then Tbilisi governorates.

Akhaltsikhe (old name - Lomsia) is a small city in southwestern Georgia, Mkhare (Province) of Samtskhe-Javakheti.
In the 12th - 13th centuries it was the seat of the Akhaltsikhelis, rulers of Samtskhe, whose two most illustrious representatives were Shalva and Ivane Akhaltsikhelis (of Akhaltsikhe).
In 1576 the Turks took it and from 1628 the city became the centre of the Akhaltsikhe Pashalik.

The most widespread name used by themselves in their community is «Akhaltsikhe Turks» («Akhyskha Turkleri» in Turkish) originated from the name of the city of Akhaltsikhe — the largest centre of the region where this people used to live.
This territory is a part of the Georgian historical province Meskheti from which the name of the «Meskheti Turks» or the «Turks–Meskhetians» was derived and became common after 1989, too, as the self-name of this group.
The Turks–Meskhetians, the Kurds and the Khemshils, who lived in Akhaltsikhe Territory and Adzharia (more than 95 thousand people in total) were deported in November 1944 to Central Asia and resettled as special immigrants in agricultural districts of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kirghizia.

 Deserters may be sued
The Georgian Defence Ministry says the 14 Armenians who deserted the army (the twelve mentioned in an earlier report and another two who joined them later) will be sued unless they voluntary return to their military unit, according to Regnum news agency.
The chiefs of the Akhaltsikhe battalion the deserters serve in deny charges of discrimination on an ethnic basis and point out that other ethnic Armenians in the battalion make no grievances.
The command believes what happened resulted from the wish of the deserters, who live in Akhalkalaki and agree to serve in a unit there, to be transferred to a place of service closer to their homes.
