	Vishwa Bharat vs. Akhand Bharat
		For decades, I have opposed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's vision of an Akhand Bharat.
		The concept of Akhand Bharat has much potential for creating strife between communities and neighbours, rather than for building bridges.
		Akhand Bharat implies that we should use muscle to dominate the subcontinent.

		The second issue which arose out of Advani’s statement was that he went against the BJP and RSS stand that India is indivisible, is an Akhand Bharat, by saying that the partition cannot be undone.
		However, politically there has never been an Akhand Bharat because even under the strongest of emperors such as Ashok or Akbar there were large parts of the country which remained separate kingdoms.
		Akhand Bharat, therefore, has to be a cultural concept, not a political one.

		Akhand Bharat (one country in the sub continent) has always been the pet dream of the Hindu revivalist parties in India and it was but natural for Advani who had grown up in that school, to express such an opinion.
		The desire of the North Indians to have an Akhand Bharat –go to Bengal and talk to any Bengali he would want Bangladesh to join the Indian Union- however is part of that impulse to have ‘extra’ real estate.
		This hatred that smacks of tribalism is remnant of the state of paranoia and mistrust the marauding invaders who constitute the ancestors of much of the people of North where afflicted with when they landed fighting their way into the subcontinent.

		The feeling for 'akhand Bharat' has to survive because it is akin to the feeling that led to the unification of Germany, Vietnam and Poland.
		As opposed to this, the Akhand Bharat concept of the RSS is a purely communal notion based on the theory and motive of building a Hindu Rashtra.
		That apart, the concept of Akhand Bharat espoused by the RSS chief is dangerous, to say the least.

		Two, the fears about the 'akhand bharat' version of reunification are misplaced -- akhand bharat is a historical myth and the subcontinent has seldom been politically united in the past (except for short periods that wer just that, short).
		Mine may not necessarily be the optimal way to proceed but it is time we broke out of the thrall of the dogmas that govern our relationships on the subcontinent.
		Re-unification is unnecessary - it raises the hackles of too many people, and leaves India open to the accusation that we haven't reconciled ourselves to partition (and cling to antediluvian ambitions of Akhand Bharat).
