		Akiko Kojima of Japan, the first woman from the Far East to capture the coveted title.
		The first Miss Universe to originate from Asia, Akiko was a 22-year-old model from Tokyo, Japan when she bested four other finalists from Norway, the USA, England, and Brazil for the 1959 Miss Universe crown in Long Beach, California.
		Akiko settled into a quiet married life after her reign.

		Kojima had some spectacular strikes, landed GT's to 6 kilos, goldens to 5 kilos and queenfish to 7 kilos, but the fish he really wanted, a big GT, was hooked on two occasions, but one broke off after a 20 minute fight and the hook pulled on the other.
