At Bylot Island, where there is a field crew conducting an intensive study of Greater Snow Goose reproduction, spring arrived early but snow and cold temperature at the beginning of June, during nest initiation, have had a negative impact on reproduction.
There was a reduced nesting effort by SJBP Canada geese on Akimiski Island (down about 30% from the average number of nests) with smaller than normal clutches, and the majority of Canada goose hatch occurred fairly synchronously between 13 and 21 June.

During the last ice age, this small island was buried under several thousand meters ice, but since its retreat, the island has rebounded (risen in elevation) and new beach areas have emerged, streams and lakes have formed, and trees and other vegetation have colonized the new territory.
This image of Akimiski Island was captured by the Landsat 7 satellite on August 9, 2000.
The island is relatively flat; the highest elevations (around 60 meters) are found in the southern part of the island, where forested, north-south trending ridges (beach ridges shaped during the ice age) alternate with elongated lakes (close up image).

This expedition was a visit to Akimiski Island, a two-fold mission to explore the island for the James Bay Islands Bird Survey, and to get breeding data for the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas.
As the island falls partly in one of Ontario's 100x100km squares, it was deemed worthy of inclusion for the Breeding Bird Atlas even though it belongs to Nunavut.
We were able to visit some islets: we landed at Gullery Island off Cape Duncan and overflew and conducted a census on the island between Gullery Island and the Cape.

The IBA focuses on the northern shores, which are flat and marshy with beach ridges, and the interior of the island, which features numerous small lakes and ponds, as well as sedge marshlands, and fens.

The two samples on the far right from Akimiski Island are the subspecies interior, and show data from Leafloor et al., demonstrating that captive-raised birds grew larger than similar birds raised in the wild there.
Leafloor et al (1998) report that captive-raised birds from Akimiski Island in James Bay have culmen length averaging 5 to 8% larger than wild birds from the same nesting area.
Leafloor et al report that the "runt" birds from Akimiski Island match the size of the same subspecies from 600 km north in Manitoba, tracking the gradual decrease in size northward.

Visible in these images are some of the many rivers that flow into the bay; starting at the southern tip and moving clockwise on the western side are the Harricana, Moose, Albany, and Attawapiskat.
