Akins has watched his team consistently improve its record, placing fifth in the series point standings in 1998 and 1999.
Akins Motorsports has recently completed a spacious, 37,000-square-foot facility in Concord, N.C. One of the largest is the NASCAR Busch Series, it houses a beautiful lobby, a spacious work area, a paint booth, a fabrication area and a fitness room.
Outside of racing, Akins is the president, chief executive officer and sole owner of the Akins Ford Corp. in Winder, Ga. Akins, a native of Barrow County, Ga., joined his father, Harold, in the car business when he was 18 and mastered every aspect of the Ford, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Jeep franchises.

Akins Motorsports, similar to FitzBradshaw Racing, started in 2001 with a partnership between current Owner/General Manager, Doug Stringer and Brad Akin, the two then formed Akins Motorsports, They fielded the #38 White Great Clips Dodge for a few races that season with Christian Elder at the controls.
As Akins Motorsports moved into the 2002 Season they went full time with Elder at the wheel, but brought on Kasey Kahne in the later part of the year.
