  Akira - Manga
Although the story is similar in many ways to the animated film of the same name, it goes into greater depth than a movie can, spending time exploring not just the characters, but the ramifications of their actions on themselves and the world around them.
His characters are three dimensional, and as "Akira" twists and turns towards its conclusion, Otomo binds the fate of the entire planet to the personal lives and passions of his small band of biker punks.

Akira (Japanese: アキラ) is a cyberpunk serial manga by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Akira is seen by the manga/anime community as an introduction to both mediums

Akira (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Akira is the 10-year-old child who first manifested these startling powers, obliterating all of Tokyo (at the beginning of the film) with an energy too great to be humanly contained — a veritable atom bomb personified in a little boy: wordless and morally indifferent, the character implicitly represents the 'divine wind'
Akira was a young boy who developed immense psychic abilities when serving as a test subject for secret government ESP experiments in the 1980s.
The anime cropped the whole of the manga's destructive aftermath scenario effected by the title character, which notably included: the establishment of the Great Tokyo Empire, with Akira serving as emperor and Tetsuo as prime minister; Tetsuo's partial destruction of the Moon; and the arrival of an American assassin sent to kill Akira.

 AAW: AKIRA Review
Based on the acclaimed manga series by Katsuhiro Otomo, it was the highest-budget anime film ever produced at the time and one of the first of the "modern" anime films to be released in the US, and even as it approaches two decades old it is still a technical tour de force.
In all, AKIRA may feature a plot that is weird, only partially explained, rather confusing, and not for everyone, but the nightmarish, apocalyptic visions will be hard to take your eyes off of, and I'm not exaggerating when I say the lush visuals are the rule by which all other anime is measured.
AKIRA is such a classic, and so visually striking, that any anime fan should see it at least once, and many will want to watch it again and again to more fully appreciate the density of the plot.

Akira's premise seems kinda old hat these days, but the whole apocalypse/world war 3/Neo Tokyo thing was relatively novel back in 1982 when it was first released.

Almost every anime fan has seen or heard of AKIRA the animated movie—it was one of the first anime movies to get wide-scale recognition in the U.S. But before AKIRA the movie, there was AKIRA the manga.
AKIRA was first released in the states back in 1988 by Marvel Comics, but this is the first time that it is being offered in the "phone book"-sized graphic novel format in which it originally appeared when it came out in Japan.
One of the things that I like about AKIRA the manga is the epic story that it is trying to tell.
