Japanese author Akiyuki Nosaka’s Grave of the Fireflies shows war from a different and often forgotten view, one that focuses on the most innocent and tragic victims of war—the children.
Nosaka was born in Kanagawa, Japan, on October 10, 1930.
Nosaka was left a war orphan and went to live at a reformatory.

If you ever get the chance to read Nosaka Akiyuki's book Hotaru no Haka (the novel which Grave of the Fireflies is based on), Nosaka explains he left his sister (who was even younger than Setsuko, closer to two years of age compared to Setsuko's five years) for several reasons.
First, Nosaka's infant sister was severely malnourished and dehydrated from her constant diarrhea, so she was in no position to be running about.
In one heartbreaking moment in the book, Nosaka describes how starvation took over his sense of duty to his sister as he often fed himself first and brought whatever was left back to his sister.

History Behind Grave of the Fireflies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Grave of the Fireflies, or Hotaru no Haka, is a powerful and emotional anime based on the experiences of author Nosaka Akiyuki during the World War II firebombing raids that ravaged most of the cities of Japan.
Kobe is where Seita and Setsuko of Grave of the Fireflies lived with their mother as the film begins; author Nosaka Akiyuki had spent his early years in the city.
Nosaka, upon viewing the film, felt that Takahata succeeded.

Tombstone for Fireflies (aka Grave of the Fireflies)
War orphan and post-war delinquent, Akiyuki Nosaka (born in 1930) won the Naoki literary prize in 1967 for a pair of autobiographical novellas, Hotaru no Haka and Hijiki America, which have unfortunately not been translated into English to my knowledge.
Takahata seems to share Nosaka's desire to arouse the memory of history, and takes pains to remind his smug and prosperous compatriots (before the bubble burst) of a repressed history of national and personal shame; to re-enact or, more precisely, animate the death, destruction and suffering which were the fruits of national imperialism and militarism.

 Anime Reviews
As Takahata explains in an interview on this two-disc set, the story—an adaptation of a semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka—is a warning about short-sighted pride, though one that he fears viewers generally miss in their sympathy for the protagonists.
The two films were co-funded as a joint project by Nosaka's publishers, and they toured together as a double feature.
They have certain similarities; both center on a pair of siblings struggling with the emotional effects of an absent mother in a hospital, and a scene in Totoro where big sister Satsuki confronts little sister Mei's desire to see their mother again mirrors a similar scene in Fireflies.

In some respects, it could be seen as one of the most realistic anime films ever made, as it is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka.
Like the protagonist of the movie, Nosaka was a young boy in World War II, and endured the fire bombings of the Allied forces.
In an interview years later, Nosaka said that he had always divided up their food and supplies by looking after himself first and his sister second; and that he still felt guilty about her death, and whether he could have saved her or not.

Writer-director Isao Takahata turns this tragedy into what can only be described as a poetic experience, achieving a cinematic lyricism that could never have been accomplished in a live-action film (e.g., the way the fireflies have a counterpoint in the pieces of ash that drift on the wind after the fire bombings).
Based on an autobiography by Akiyuki Nosaka, the film, set during the bombing of Japan in --of all times-- World War II, centers on Seita, a loving, headstrong Navy soldier's son and his innocent little sister, Setsuko.
