Akkerman was born in the 'de Jordaan' area of Amsterdam, the son of a scrap iron trader.
Akkerman's distinctive guitar sound is characterised by his pioneering use of volume swells which produce a smooth, fluty, sustained note.

During a recording session, Akkerman, who was fond of jamming and session playing, hooked up with the embryo Focus, and was ejected from Brainbox as a result.
In 1978, Akkerman's contract with Atlantic was ended due to the high costs involved with his insistence of hiring full symphony orchestras and low record sales, and Akkerman went off to persue other musical avenues, pausing only to attempt a Focus re-group.
On February 16th 2005, Akkerman was awarded with a Golden Harp award at the Harpen Gala, proving that he is still not only going strong, with his favourite annual Dutch and UK tours, but still impressing with his skills.

The repertory is drawn largely from 16th century Tudor England, including compositions by John Dowland and Antony Holborne, rearranged by Akkerman and harpsichord virtuoso and scholar George Flynn.
He gives one major concession to progressive rock in the form of the fuzz-laden reinterpretation of "House of the King," which misses the flute part from the Focus original but is still worth hearing as a guitar showcase.
What makes this album doubly intriguing is that apart from Flynn, Akkerman's accompanists come entirely from the rock world: Tim Bogert, Carmine Appice, and veteran R&B drummer Ray Lucas, none of whom seems to skip a beat in their work here.

Performing these works on metal strings is a major departure in itself, and to do so on a guitar with built-in transducer and using studio reverb will really provoke the purists, which can only be a good thing.

This album features a number of Jimi's songs and covers (including Little wing and All along the watchtower) and in keeping with the tradition of the blues this record is raw with some fierce blues playing from Akkerman and soulful vocals from Knight.
Jan Akkerman is an awesome guitarist, but the combination of he and King Curtis doesn't work (Just as his earlier attempt to include vocals on the, "FOCUS CON PROBY" album was also a disaster).
I have most all of Akkerman's work, and would not reccommend this one.
