		The vendetta of the Akô ronin, however, was reported in one utterly non-committal line, and their seppuku was not even mentioned.
		He argues that the vendettas of the Soga Brothers and the 47 Ronin were both attempts to appease the vengeful spirits (onryô) of their dead masters (or father in the Soga case), drawing on Japanese folklore research on onryô.
		It might be argued that the two words "Kanadehon" and "Chûshingura" imply two different vectors in the interpretation of the Akô vendetta, with the former emphasizing the individuality and sense of honor of each the 47 separate retainers, and the latter implying their unity as a band loyal to a single lord.

		On the snowy night of January 30, 1703, in an incident known as the Ako vendetta, forty-six samurai burst into the mansion of the man responsible for the death of their former master, Asano Naganori, the lord of Ako.
		The vendetta served as the basis for what is without doubt the most famous and popular work of the traditional Japanese theater, Kanadehon Chushingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers: A Model for Emulation).
		Therefore, the theatrical version of the Ako vendetta was set in the days of the fourteenth-century shogun Takauiji; Asano, Kira, and Oishi became Enya, Moronao, and Oboshi, and the setting of the play was changed from Edo to Kamakura.

		In 1701 the shogun chose Lord Asano of the Ako domain to chaperone two representatives of the imperial household during their annual visit to Edo.
		He was told to seek instruction in the complex protocols associated with such a visit from Moronao, one of the shogun’s ministers.
		By 1706 the Osaka playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon was incorporating parts of the vendetta tale into his puppet (bunraku) plays, avoiding censorship by recasting the tale into an earlier era and changing the names of the main characters.
