It is the sole daily newspaper in Akron and is distributed throughout Northeast Ohio.
The Beacon Journal would be the largest newspaper in the Black Press chain, which also owns the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

The Beacon Journal, which once anchored John S. Knight's newspaper chain, is one of 12 papers to be offered for sale as the result of the purchase of Knight Ridder Inc. by McClatchy Co., a smaller newspaper chain based in Sacramento, Calif.
