Akron is the 82nd largest city in the United States and is the 5th largest city in Ohio (U.S. Census Bureau, 2001).
Akron is home to The University of Akron and the Akron Aeros Double A baseball team in the Eastern League.
Much of Akron's early growth was because of its location at the "summit" of the Ohio and Erie Canal (thus the name "Summit County") which at one time wended its way between Lake Erie and the Ohio River.

The Akron Pros was a National Football League team that played in Akron, Ohio from 1920-1925 and as the Akron Indians in 1926.
The Pros became a charter member of the NFL (then known as the American Professional Football Association) in 1920 and won the first ever league title.
In 1926, the name was changed to the Akron Indians, which had been an earlier Akron semi-pro team, but that didn't help.

USS Akron, first of a class of two 6,500,000 cubic foot rigid airships, was built at Akron, Ohio.
During the remainder of 1931 and the early part of 1932, Akron made flights around the eastern United States and over the western Atlantic, including one trial of her capabilities as a scouting unit of the fleet.
Damaged in a ground-handling accident at Lakehurst in late February 1932, she was again ready for flight two months later and began tests of her ability to operate an embarked unit of airplanes.
