Topic: Akropolis

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  Palác Akropolis
The agency undertook the general reconstruction of the pre-war Akropolis theatre - which was closed to the public and abandoned in 1948 and had since been deteriorating - and re-opened the theatre in 1996.
The new interior of the AKROPOLIS PALACE was awarded a special prize in INTERIOR 96, a national competition organised by the Design Centre of the Czech Republic and the Czech Chamber of Architects.
The audience of the AKROPOLIS PALACE is very cosmopolitan, and the evenings organised in the framework of the "UNITED COLOURS OF AKROPOLIS" or "EuroConnections" cycles are a favourite stop for the representatives of foreign Embassies in Prague, or business and professional residents of Prague of foreign origin.

SparkNotes: Lysistrata: Lysistrata's Appeal–Gates of the Akropolis
Lysistrata also tells the women that the Akropolis, including the temple of Athena, will be seized by women later in the day to prevent the Athenians from using the money from the treasury for the war.
As the men work with their firepots at the gates of the Akropolis, the Chorus of Old Women, carrying pitchers of water and led by the Koryphaios of Women, approaches.
The Akropolis belonged to Athena and was primarily a religious place.

From the Akropolis, it is easy to see why this abrupt steep-sided rock was chosen as the first citadel of ancient Athens: it is a superb natural defensive site.
As one toils up the slopes of the Akropolis, past the souvenir stands, the freelance guides, and the refreshment stalls, one is aware of the mighty presence of the Propylaia, designed by the famous architect Mnesicles.
Like many of the monuments on the Akropolis, the Erechtheion is feeling the effects of time and urban pollution, and its elegant columns the Caryatid Maidens, have had to be removed (and replaced with copies) for safekeeping.

 CLAS4640:DR.Norman
Summary: In Athens in the Prehistoric period, there is evidece of occupation and/or burial on slopes of Akropolis and within area of later agora; Akropolis probably had Mycenaean palace on its summit, by 13th century BCE the Akropolis had a massive fortification system and a protected water supply.
These new buildings included some on the Akropolis: new entrance, so-called Older Parthenon etc. Unfortunately the Persian sack of the Akropolis in the summer of 480 BCE damaged many of the buildings on the Akropolis and the so-called Oath of Plataia meant that they were never finished.
Some damaged buildings remained on the Akropolis for a full generation as a war memorial and as a reminder of the hybris of the Persians and the debt owed to the gods for their ultimate defeat.

SparkNotes: Lysistrata: Gates of the Akropolis–Wool Metaphor
The Commissioner, realizing that the Akropolis has been taken by women, concludes that the women must be involved in some kind of orgy or "spontaneous combustion of lust" and takes the opportunity to rant about women and the imminent moral chaos that they create.
The Commissioner orders four policemen to arrest Lysistrata and the women, but the men are overpowered by the women's threats comprised of a chamber pot, a lamp, a pair of tweezers, and finally an entire hoard of women brandishing pots and household articles.
This passage reduces and undercuts the women's seizure of the Akropolis as an anomalous and comedic event; although the women take real power in the course of Lysistrata, women are not included in Lysistrata's idealized vision of the city.

 The TNT Akropolis stands
You all know which is the job that a speaker stand should do: put the speaker at the correct height from the floor, control its resonancies and be stiff enough to avoid any rocking when the speaker is playing (and hence vibrating).
Try this experiment at home: when playing Music with plenty of bass at high levels put your hand on one leg of the speaker stand: you'll be surprised by the amount of vibration.
The name Akropolis, that comes from the fact that these pillars remind some ancient Greek temples, has been given by Ivana, a friend of mine who fell in love with these speaker stands some months ago.

DCist: A Post Akropolis-tic Lecture   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
It is this concept of Greek architectural poise and symmetry that will be the thrust of a talk at the National Gallery of Art at noon on Saturday.
While it may seem as if you’ve seen one ancient ruin, you’ve seen them all, DCist recommends you take a different look at this topic: the Propylaia is sort of the Jan Brady of ancient architecture: awkward, misunderstood, yet strangely provocative and alluring.
Dinsmoor will also be plugging her latest book she edited, "Propylaia to the Athenian Akropolis II: The Classical Building." The Paris Review calls it a "playful romp through Hellenistic fields of knowledge." Perhaps you may even be able to get a copy signed.
