SUBSIM Review - AKULA! The Soviet Shark
The Akula class nuclear submarine is officially deemed Project 971 Shuka B (shuka is an aggressive breed of fresh water pike).
It is generally believed that an Akula displaces an estimated 7500 tons surfaced, 9100 tons submerged, with a length of 108-113 meters and a beam of 13.5 meters.
The Akula does not follow the two-reactor tradition." Whichever the case may be, the Akula is capable of underwater speeds of 35 knots (claimed) and this, too, may be a conservative rating.

In 1998, a disgruntled sailor overpowered a guard and barricaded himself in the torpedo compartment of a Northern Fleet Akula-class submarine.
A fire beneath the torpedoes would have led to the explosion of all of the submarine's ammunition, which would have destroyed the submarine, neighboring nuclear submarines and the port town of Gadzhiyevo, not to mention the greater consequences of destroying the nuclear reactors.
Guards have often been caught supplementing their meager incomes of about $35 a month by stealing and selling metal from the submarines they are supposed to guard, or taking bribes to look the other way as others steal from the vessels.

 Akula Class Nuclear Attack Submarine
History: The Delfin class attack submarines (SSN) were originally conceived in 1972 as Project 971/971U "Bars", a strategic cruise missile launch platform (SSGN) capable of launching the S-10 Granat missile, a Soviet copy of the American Tomahawk cruise missile.
Consequently, the 971, and not the 945, was adopted as the follow on general purpose submarine to replace the aging 671 fleet.
Deployed roughly at the same time as the American Improved Los Angeles class fast attack submarines, the 971 boats produce more noise than the early Los Angeles class, though their performance is far superior to earlier Soviet designs.
