It forms the northernmost district of Lower Burma, and consists of the level tract lying between the sea and the Arakan Yoma mountains, and of the broken country formed by a portion of their western spurs and valleys.
The four chief towns are Khumgchu in the extreme north-east of the district; Koladaing in the centre; Arakan, farther down the rivers; and Akyab on the coast, where their mouths converge.
Akyab was the metropolitan province of the native kingdom of Arakan, and the history of that country centres in it.

According to a source from Akyab, at least 50 people were arrested by the authority after they imposed the curfew.
The murder happened while three families from the Burmese Army were going to a jetty of Akyab on their return trip to their native town, Taung Guok, a southern town of Arakan.
One army official and his father were stabbed to death on the spot and the army officer's ten-year-old son escaped unharmed.

Akyab, July 22: A woman, Ma Tha Nu from Akyab city, has been facing a lawsuit in district court, for constructing a house on her own land, said a lawyer from Akyab.
The plot is located at the Kondam quarter of Akyab, and had been confiscated by government authority from Ma Tha Nu’s family, for the Burma Oil Company, in General Ne Win’s era.
During the construction of the house, the Akyab Municipal erected a signboard, stating the official permission, in front of the Ma Tha Nu house compound.

The prisoners were arrested by Akyab police at the Ra Chan Byin jetty, situated at the bank of the Mayu River, in 2003 while they were preparing to leave for Bangladesh on a machine boat along with a large amount of smuggled rice.
Their relatives went to the prisoner’s labor camp of Laynyin daung under the Mrauk U Township to inquire about the missing prisoners, but there are not any bodies in the labor camp, another female relative from Rathidaung said.
In a report published on 30 January 2005, it is stated that at least 300 prisoners from Akay and Kyauk Pru jail have been dispatched by military authority to the Eastern Karan state (near Thai-Burma border) to be used as military porters.

The cargo from the sea faring trading vessels are to be off-loaded to smaller boats offshore, since the trading vessels are unable to dock at the broken jetty, a trader from Akyab says.

Despite the AVG raid--the worst pummeling the 64th Sentai had received during the war--"the whole troop reorganized and joined the combat again." Indeed, it was back in action the same afternoon.
Eleven Hayabusas were still in service after the AVG strike, and these finally managed to get off for Akyab, escorting 26 Sally heavy bombers of the 98th Sentai.
Afterward, the historian relates how "the Kato troop was happily talking and remembering" the battle The "2nd Chutai tried to make themselves look like the enemy troop and shot down heavily-gunned fighter planes." I assume this mock combat was just talk, on the ground, but it's not clear.
