Topic: Al Borland

In the News (Sun 12 Oct 08)

Home Improvement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cautious, insecure, and brighter Borland always bore the brunt of Tim Taylor's jokes and constant put-downs.
A running joke was Tim's references to Al's overweight mother, who is usually referred to but is never seen throughout the series — although in one episode, she dies and the characters are at her funeral.
Al has a "twin" brother named Cal who is a physicist, and unlike other siblings across the world, they have never gotten into a physical fight; instead, they settle their disputes over a cup of tea.

Tool Time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, Tim was more inclined to joke around, especially about Al's overweight mother and his affinity for wearing flannel shirts.
Al would attempt to continue the show in a proper manner.
Invariably, whenever Al was about to demonstrate the use of a particular machine, Tim would bring out his own version of the same machine that had been rewired for more power.

Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care - Research Papers - Education
Berridge and Brodie (1998) found that although educational problems were rarely the predominant reason for a child to be in a children's home, it was considered to be a 'major' problem for 59% of the children.
Biehal et al (1992) found an association between movements in care and poor educational attainment: three-quarters of young people with four or more moves in care had no qualifications compared to half of those who had no moves.
While Berridge et al (1996, cited in Borland et al, 1998) describe a commitment to provide young people with a quiet place for study, Berridge and Brodie (1998) found that facilities for homework were sometimes unsatisfactory with limited privacy for study (see also Blyth and Milner, 1997; Fletcher 1993; Stein, 1994).

British Journal of Pharmacology - Vasoconstriction is determined by interstitial rather than circulating angiotensin II   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Neither the vasoconstrictor metabolites Ang III and IV (Li et al., 1995), nor the vasodilator metabolite Ang-(1 − 7) (Ferrario et al., 1997; Tom et al., 2001) were present in detectable amounts.
For instance, previous in-vivo (Siragy et al., 1995; Dell'italia et al., 1997) and in-vitro (de lannoy et al., 1997; 1998) studies have shown that interstitial fluid Ang II may be higher than circulating Ang II.
Taken together, the similar potencies of Ang I and II in the present and previous studies (Danser et al., 1995; Maassenvandenbrink et al., 1999; Saris et al., 2000), can be fully explained on the basis of the interstitial Ang II levels that are reached in the vessel wall during Ang I and II application.

 Home Improvement - Richard Karn
Richard Karn is entering his eighth season as Al Borland on ABC's "Home Improvement," America's number-one family comedy, which is also popular worldwide.
Karn was given the job -- but just for the pilot episode, because the original actor was slated to return for the series.
When Al's trademark line, "I don't think so, Tim," landed the biggest laugh of the pilot, Karn's fate with "Home Improvement" was sealed.

I had sent Al a picture of Ben and I, and I had seen a picture of him on his website, and it's a good thing that Ben hadn't changed much since the picture had been taken.
To be honest with you, after all the hours and hours that we had spent talking to each other, and from all that I knew of Al, it really wouldn't have mattered if he had shown up with three heads.

Kaufman (1983) concluded that there was no significant association between the nicotine or carbon monoxide yields of cigarettes and the risk of myocardial infarction, although Wald (1983) suggests that this might simply be due to the levels of carbon monoxide being approximately constant due to compensation.
A recent study in America (Phillips et al, 1983) is also understood to have found no evidence that such commonly suspected risk factors as cholesterol, high density lipoproteins, high blood pressure and cigarette smoking differed among those who did and did not have heart attacks.

 Richard Karn
Richard Karn is best known for playing the role of Al Borland, Tim Allen's handy sidekick on "Home Improvement." But before Karn landed the role of co-host of "Tool Time", the fictional cable home improvement show on "Home Improvement," he had a successful career as a Broadway actor and appeared in a number of movies.
At the time he was cast as Al Borland, Karn was working as an apartment manager in Los Angeles.
Originally, Al was just supposed to appear in the first six episodes, because the actor who was chosen for the role of Tim Taylor's official co-host was busy filming a movie.

Al Borland -- Who among us does not have a soft spot in his or her heart for Al Borland, the lovable sidekick of Tim Allen's character on Tool Time, the show-within-a-show on Home Improvement?
We get hints that Al is dissatisfied with his position, as in his rivalry with his brother: "You're just jealous that I'm a TV star [sic] and you're just a lowly physicist!" -- the irony, of course, being that physicists are held in high esteem in American society.
In this case, the full name is not necessary to the effect, because "Al" is by itself a very unusual name for a cat.
