Di Meola went on to explore a variety of styles, but is most noted for his Latin-influenced jazz fusion works.

The last piece on the album is one that Di Meola is very familiar with, having performed it with its composer, Chick Corea, during his time with Corea's band, Return to Forever.
Di Meola plays the Fender Stratocaster as well as several acoustic guitars and drums along with Jackson on bass and Mario Parmisano on acoustic piano.

In 1971 he enrolled at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where by his second semester he was playing in a fusion quartet led by keyboardist Barry Miles.
But it was in early 1974 that he received a phone call from a keyboardist named Chick Corea, and together with bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Lenny White formed the seminal fusion group Return to Forever.

Guitarist Al di Meola first rose to prominence as a blazing jazz fusion player before his playing matured and he began to conquer other styles, such as acoustic Latin music.
It was with di Meola that Return to Forever enjoyed their greatest commercial success, as such releases as 1974's Where Have I Known Before, 1975's No Mystery, and 1976's Romantic Warrior cracked the U.S. Top 40 before di Meola jumped ship to launch a solo career.
During the '90s, di Meola turned his back almost entirely on fusion to concentrate more on acoustic-based world music, as evidenced by such releases as World Sinfonia, Di Meola Plays Piazzolla, and Heart of the Immigrants, among others.

Personally I feel Al is better when he doesn't have the pressure of being forced to lead a band -- that's why his three albums with RtF are so magnificent.
The guitar playing is fierce, funky and tasteful; he makes nice use of his patented "percolater" effect, damping the strings with his wrist and using the guitar almost as a percussion instrument, which goes along well with the latin/rock/funk compositions and the presence of Mingo Lewis, the percussionist.

It’s not that I didn’t expect Al Di Meola to be good -- you couldn’t listen to him tear up the place with RTF and think that -- but The Essence of Al Di Meola distills something even stronger than that band.
Di Meola’s guitar takes a greater share of the limelight than it did with RTF, with better results (that is, if you like your fusion to lean a little more toward rock).
Sometimes, as on “Electric Rendezvous,” Di Meola almost crosses over into speed metal, spitting out rapid rhythmic nails from his fingers.
