Cook and Jonikas (1996) review the outcomes of a wide range of psychosocial rehabilitation programs, including Fairweather lodges (Fairweather et al., 1969) and psychosocial clubhouses (Dincin, 1975), some of which were demonstrated as effective 20 and 30 years ago but have not been widely implemented.
The new priorities of psychiatric hospitalization focus on ameliorating the risk of danger to self or others in those circumstances in which dangerous behavior is associated with mental disorder, and the rapid return of patients to the community (Sederer and Dickey, 1995).
Although there is little evidence for any particular approach to combining treatments for comorbidity (Ley et al., 1999), recent research suggests that services incorporating behavioral (motivational) approaches to substance abuse treatment are superior to traditional 12-step approaches (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous) with this population of clients (Drake et al., 1998).

Ecology: Are adult nonbreeders prudent parents? The kittiwake model
It may be that nonbreeding has several causes and that some individuals can be involved regardless of the demographic context, whereas others exhibit this behavior only in specific situations such as resource shortage or severe climatic disturbance.
It would be desirable to use a state variable such as body mass or "condition" that can be viewed as a predictor of breeding state and survival probability.
It is possible that the consequences of nonbreeding are not the same for individuals that fail to breed because of mate loss, eviction (Harris and Wanless 1995), physical destruction of the nest, or nest shortage (Chastel et al.

The corpus callosum is critical for interhemispheric synchronization and generalization of the EEG paroxysms in Papio papio, and probably in humans, as shown in a photosensitive subject with agenesis of the corpus callosum (Brinciotti et al 1990).
The model of human pattern-sensitive epilepsy is of special interest because it is an example of apparently generalized or bilateral clinical events and EEG abnormalities activated by a specific functional stimulation with a known localization.
The prevalence of this sensitivity is highly dependent on the age and sex of the population studied, and on the criteria for normality and on the definition of an abnormal response (Zifkin and Kasteleijn-Nolst Trenite 2000).

Although a random assignment study of a Crossing Place model has only recently been published (Fenton et al., 1998), it was clear from early on that the Soteria method "worked" with this nonresearchcriteria-derived heterogeneous client group.

Therefore, in the analysis of tumor data, it is essential to identify and adjust for possible differences in intercurrent mortality among treatment groups to eliminate or reduce biases caused by these differences.
One way to choose the appropriate survival-adjusted methods in the analysis of tumor data is to base analysis on the role that a tumor plays in causing the animal's death.
Tumors that are not directly or are indirectly responsible for an animal's death, but are merely observed at the autopsy of the animal after it has died of an unrelated cause, are said to have been observed in an incidental context.

Perhaps the most remarkable outcome of these many studies is that, despite numerous demonstrations of efficacy in many varied experimental systems, there are no recombinant bacterial vectors in commercial human or veterinary use in 1998.
These include defining effective background mutations (Dunstan et al., 1998), gene copy number (Dunstan SJ, Ph.D thesis, University of Melbourne), and the effects of incorporating cytokine genes into the constructs (Denich et al., 1993; Dunstan et al., 1996) on the immunogenicity of recombinant vectors.

It is argued (Beaumont et al., 1994; Lane and O'Hanlon, 1999; Riedel et al., 1998) that the effects of these drugs on performance should be predictable in terms of the drugs effects on the neurochemical system.
When multiple doses of TCAs are administered daily for periods in excess of one week, the effects on psychomotor performance at first glance, appear to suggest continued impairment to a differing extent for related compounds.
Since these compounds all affect 5HT it is tempting to relate this lack of effect after multiple dosing to effects on this neurotransmitter or to the development of tolerance.

Based on the summation of zinc losses and requirements for growth, the required amount of absorbed zinc for this age group is approximately 1.2 mg/day (Table 12-4).
With a fractional absorption of 0.3 based on studies in infants and young children (Davidsson et al., 1996; Fairweather-Tait et al., 1995), the EAR is 4.0 mg/day of zinc.
In each of two studies, one in Canada (Gibson et al., 1989) and the other in the United States (Walravens et al., 1983), zinc supplementation was associated with greater linear growth gain.

These methods avoid the need to understand and control all the physiological factors that affect the efficiency with which iron is absorbed and, in theory, should provide a consistent and reproducible means of assessing the effect of dietary variables on absorbable iron.
Clearly, it is not possible to simulate the physiological factors that account for major variations in the absorption of iron; thus, the objective of an in vitro method is to rank individual foods in order of available iron content and to predict the relative effects of enhancers and inhibitors on iron absorption.
This is usually taken to be 80 percent (Bothwell et al., 1979), but it is possible to measure it accurately by directly injecting a known (small) dose of radio-labeled iron into the blood at the same time as giving the oral dose of iron labeled with a different isotope (Brise and Hallberg, 1962).

Although the 50 Hz television screen is an important determinant of screen sensitivity and 100 Hz screens reduce the ability of the screen to trigger seizures, it is important to note that all systems are equally dangerous if certain patterns or other dangerous screen content is broadcast (see Management section).

During the "trad" jazz boom of the 1950s and 1960s, when British jazz was largely re-hashed Dixieland, Sandy Brown, in inspired partnership with trumpeter and fellow Royal High School former pupil Al Fairweather, cut a swathe through lesser talents with his extraordinarily powerful and largely self-taught clarinet style.
The event, in the Hub on Sunday, 28 July, will be hosted by Humphrey Lyttelton, the clarinet spot being filled by Forrie Cairns, recently returned to Scotland, and one of the few players who, according to Brown’s memoirs, gave his compatriot "cause for concern on the occasions [we] occupied the same bandstand".
Today there are commemorative plaques to Brown and Fairweather in their alma mater, the currently redundant Royal High School building, at the one-time jazzer’s mecca, The 100 Club, in London’s Oxford Street, and in the Usher Hall, where they played a milestone concert supporting American blues star Big Bill Broonzy in 1952.
