Al Jazirah ولاية الجزيرة (also Gezira) is one of the 26 states of Sudan.
It was part of the kingdom of Alodia for several centuries and with that state's collapse in the early sixteenth century became the centre of the Funj Kingdom of Sennar.
Al Jazirah became the Sudan's major agricultural region with more than 2.5 million acres (10,000 km²) under cultivation.

The Gezira Scheme is one of the largest irrigation projects in the world.
It is centered on the Sudanese state of Al Jazirah, just southeast of the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers at the city of Khartoum.
The Gezira Scheme was begun by the British in 1925 and distributes water from the Blue Nile through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers.

Up until WW2 the name 'Zamalek' was secondary to 'Gezirah' (also spelt Gezireh or Gezira) when referring to the fertile island linked to the mainland by Kasr el Nil Bridge.

Al Mahdi Suleiman, 30, Hassan Suleiman, 20 and Dilloh Ismail, 30, from Hasan Basau, a village in North Darfur, were reportedly attacked and killed by Arab militia while taking their cattle to grazing areas sometime in April.
Some 3000 persons were said to have fled closer to Nyala town in places called Diraige and Al Nil.
The local authorities allegedly put as a condition for assistance to them that they return back to their villages, even though these had been burnt and were located in insecure areas prone to attacks.
