Follow the road through Ibra to Al Kamil where you turn right to Al Ashkarah (straight ahead goes to Sur and Ras al Hadd where the green turtles surf).
The beach at Al Ashkarah has potential (turn left at the first roundabout, soft sand on the beach) but it didn't look as good as further on.

The Al Hajar Mountain range is the highest in eastern Arabia, forming a spectacular wall of mountains that rise from the surrounding deserts.
Situated in northern Oman, the Al Hajar al Gharbi montane ecoregion runs northwest to southeast in a 500 km arc paralleling Oman’s Batinah coast and extending roughly to Badiyah, not quite as far as Ras al Hadd on the easternmost point of Oman.
The highest part of the Al Hajar al Gharbi range is the limestone massif of Jebal Akdar (Green Mountain), lying between the western and eastern portions of the range.

The multitude and frequency of greens at Ras al Hadd have led to its establishment as a nature reserve protected by the ministry and if you visit now, you must obtain a permit at the gate to the reserve (this costs RO2 and can be done on the spot).
The green turtle itself is huge – the one we see is almost one metre in length and probably about 100kg; and this is just a medium sized one – the large ones can grow up to one and a half metres and weigh over 200kg.
It’s interesting to wonder where it has been and where its journey is now taking it – possibly towards the beaches at Ras al Hadd to lay dozens of eggs that will most probably not survive.

Excavations in Ras Al Hadd area have so far uncovered the well preserved remains of a small settlement daring to the first half of third millennium BC, made of mud brick square planned houses built over a solid artificial platform of beaten clay and sand surrounded by a wall of undressed stones.
