Alfred C. Haynes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alfred C. "Al" Haynes (born 1932 in Dallas, Texas) is a former airline pilot and a regular guest speaker at social events.
Haynes gained international fame in 1989, when he successfully crash-landed United Airlines Flight 232, a DC-10 jetliner, at Sioux City Airport.
Haynes, remembering that DC-10s had been grounded ten years earlier due to engine failure, realized the airplane couldn't be airborne much longer, and decided to land the airplane at the Sioux City, Iowa airport, where a fuselage section ended up in an adjoining cornfield.

Haynes was hailed as a hero when 184 of the 296 passengers and crew survived a crash that many said should have killed everyone on board.
Haynes credited luck: The weather was good, emergency crews in Sioux City had trained for a wide-body jet crash, the Iowa National Guard was meeting in Sioux City that day and the crash occurred during shift change at the town's two hospitals, effectively doubling the staff.

Taken together with data that suggest the inheritance of certain HLA-encoded or other host genes may be associated with either rapid progression or non-progression to AIDS (Haynes et al, Science 271:324-328 (1996)), these data suggest that host gene expression may determine the quality and/or quantity of host anti-HIV immune responses.
This CD8+ "HIV suppressor" activity is initially present in rapid progressors, then declines with the onset of AIDS (Walker et al, Science 234:1563-1566 (1986)), and may be mediated in part by cytokines such as IL-16 (Baier et al, Nature 378:563 (1995)), and by the chemokines, RANTES, MIP-1a and MIP-1b (Cocchi et al, Science 270:1811-1815 (1995)).
Using these two sets of data and the Hardy-Weinberg theorem (Hardy, Science 28:49-50 (1908)), the proportion of each of the four populations that would be predicted to present peptides to the immune system if a limited number of HIV epitopes were included in a vaccine designed specifically for that population can be estimated.

The errors in corrected line-widths are the dominant source of error in the TF-relation (Jacoby et al.

Asymmetric line profiles raise several questions on calibration of the TF relation, since calculating line-profile widths of such asymmetric profiles may not accurately estimate the maximum rotational velocity of these galaxies.
