Hibbler was a featured vocalist with the Ellington band for their Carnegie Hall concerts in 1944, 1946, and 1947, which survive today on live recordings.
Al re-records the Leroy Lovett song "After The Lights Go Down Low" for Decca on # 29982 ("I Was Telling Her About You" on the flip), and the humorous rendition complete with exaggerated British accent, goes over well with the record buying public.
Al Hibbler then lived out the rest of his years until he passed away in April of 2001 in Chicago at the age of 85.

 Golden Voice -- Al Hibbler
His frequent use of a Cockney accent and non-subtle growling techniques kept listeners on their toes though, far from a novelty act, Hibbler's voice was strong, emotive and masculine, with a steady vibrato that carried every record he made.
After quickly signing to Verve, Hibbler continued to record with excellent musicians (Harry Carney, Count Basie, Gerald Wilson) for his initial solo work, and in 1954 released an LP of old favorites entitled Al Hibbler Sings Duke Ellington.
While other major artists gave generously to the cause, Hibbler actually marched with protestors and was arrested twice, once in New Jersey in 1959 and again in Alabama in 1963 (after he led an anti-segregation protest).

Al Hibbler was best known for the eight years he spent with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1943-51), although his presence there often seemed an anomalous one.
Albert Hibbler was born blind, and did not attend school until he was in his mid-teens, when he went to Arkansas School for the Blind.
Hibbler reported that Ellington told him that while he was ready to handle a blind man in the band, he was not ready for a blind drunk.

In the fifties, Hibbler’s bizarre use of vibrato and dramatic emphasis and his distorted accenting of words (which Duke Ellington described as ‘tonal pantomime’ briefly won him a wide audience.
Hibbler rose to fame as a vocalist with the bands of Dub Jenkins, Jay McShann and Ellington with whom he sang for eight years from 1943.
In the mid-sixties, Hibbler returned briefly to the club circuit in the wake of ‘The Righteous Brothers’ successful blue-eyed soul revivals of ‘Unchained Melody’ and ‘He’.

Al Hibbler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Albert George Hibbler (August 16, 1915-April 24, 2001) was a singer.
In the late 1950s and 1960s, Hibbler became a civil rights activist, marching with protestors and getting arrested in 1959 in New Jersey and in 1963 in Alabama.
However, Hibbler made very few recordings after that, occasionally doing live appearances through the 1990s.

Al Hibbler took advantage of Duke Ellington's policy of letting members of his orchestra record on their own as he made these cuts for the Chess label over a period of two years in the late '40s.
While singularly expressive, Hibbler had not yet adopted the exaggerated delivery style that was to characterize his later recordings.
Accent or not, this is some of Hibbler's better work outside of the Ellington organization, notwithstanding his big hit to come, "Unchanged Melody." Helped out by some outstanding jazz musicians, most from the Ellington band, he takes his comparatively unaffected rich, full baritone through a play list of ballads, blues, and up-tempo material.

 Al Hibbler Biography : Oldies.com
Blind from birth, Hibbler attended the Conservatory for the Blind in Little Rock, Arkansas, becoming a member of the school choir.
In the 50s Hibbler's recordings of songs such as "It Shouldn't Happen To A Dream", which he had recorded with Ellington, "The Very Thought Of You" and "Star Dust" proved popular, while his version of "Unchained Melody" (a Top 5 million-seller) was outstanding.
A powerful, rich-toned baritone, with a steady vibrato, Hibbler cannot be regarded as a jazz singer but as an exceptionally good interpreter of twentieth-century popular songs who happened to work with some of the best jazz musicians of the time.

While Ellington's Columbia recordings do miss out on one of the band's most important vocalists, the wonderfully smooth Herb Jeffries, the band's return to the label fortunately coincided with the rise to pre-emince of Jeffries's replacement, the rougher and bluesier Al Hibbler.

This popular vocalist, long a fixture with the Duke Ellington band, had a long and distinguished run on the pop charts in the dark days of 1950s pre-rock & roll.
Much was made of his blindness (Hibbler knocked down many a door for vision-impaired performers, paving the way for Ray Charles in particular), but the real glory was his voice, an instrument that could soar with the best of them.
