Hirschfeld's art style is unique, and he is considered to be one of the most important figures in contemporary caricature, having influenced countless cartoonists.
Hirschfeld is known for hiding the name of his daughter, Nina, in all of the drawings he produced since her birth in 1945.
Hirschfeld originally intended the NINA gag to be a one-time gimmick but it soon spiraled out of control.

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is a notable Broadway theatre at 302 W. 45th Street in Manhattan.
The theatre was sold to Jujamcyn in 1968.
On June 21, 2003 it was renamed the Al Hirschfeld theatre in honor of the caricaturist famous for his drawings of Broadway celebrities, and reopened on November 23, 2003 with a revival of the musical Wonderful Town.

This is a rare event on Broadway - to be performing in a show when a theatre is renamed - you could probably count on one hand the number of existing theatres that have gone through such an event.
For those that are not familiar, Al Hirschfeld has been the the visual archivist of Broadway - his line drawings have appeared in the New York times for Decades (along with the hidden "Ninas") and he has captured hundreds of BroaBroadway personalities.
Hirschfeld's 100th birthday (!), but unfortunately he passed away about 3 months ago, so now the dedication will be a celebration of his life and his art.

The United States Post Office gave Hirschfeld the honour of having his caricatures on 29-cent US postage stamps in 1991.
Al Hirschfeld died of natural causes at the age of 99 on January 21, 2003.
