 Jabal Roses
THE rose gardens of Al Jabal al Akhdar — the Green Mountain — are a sight to behold: hundreds upon hundreds of rose bushes growing on terraces cut into the side of a mountain, cascading all the way down to the bottom of the gorge.
In April, swathes of this rocky and rugged landscape break out in a spectacular bloom of bright pink, as the famous roses of Al Jabal al Akhdar blossom in their millions exuding a rich fragrance all around the countryside.
Al Aqar is one of several villages at the heart of the rose water cultivation and extraction business in these mountains.

Palaeozoic sediments of the Al Hajar supergroup form the northern flank of both the Al Jabal al Akhdar and the Seih Hatat anticlines.
Blue pools are common on both sides of the northern Oman mountains where alkaline water flowing through and emerging from the fractured ophiolites reacts with the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

South of Jebel Al Akhdar is a vast desert lowland—part of As Sahra Al Libiyah (Libyan Desert), which extends to the Egyptian border—where Sarir Kalanshiyu, a large “sea” of fine mobile sands and dunes, As Sarir, and Ramlat Rabyanah are located.
Settlement is concentrated in a few widely separated oases: Wahat Jalu and Jaghbub in N and Az Zighan and Al Jawf (the largest oases in Wahat Al Kufra) in the S. In SW Cyrenaica, Sarir Tibasti and a narrow arm of the central Saharan Tibasti Mountains cross the border into Chad.

Al Jabal al Akhdar lies at the heart of Al Hajar, the mountains of northern Oman  (see satellite image).
Structurally, Al Jabal al Akhdar is a huge anticline flanked by hard limestones of Jurassic to Cretaceous age and ophiolites, enthrusted mantle rocks.  The core of the anticline has been eroded to reveal older rocks dating back through the Permian to the early Precambrian. 
The Al Jabal Al-Akhdhar Hotel is now open to guests, lying on the road to Saiq amongst the villages of the plateau.
