		It is bounded on the north by Egypt; on the east by the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia; on the south by Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire); and on the west by the Central African Republic, Chad, and Libya.
		Sudan has a maximum length from north to south of more than 2,250 km (1,400 mi); the extreme width of the country is about 1,730 km (about 1,075 mi).
		The population of Sudan is composed principally of Arabs in the north and fl Africans in the south; many Arabs are of mixed ancestry.

	Gunman Kills at Least 20 in Sudan Mosque Attack [Free Republic]
		MENA said an angry crowd had gathered outside a hospital in Omdurman where the casualties had been taken, demanding revenge for the attack on the mosque, which belongs to supporters of another Muslim faction, Ansar al-Sunna.
		The Khartoum-datelined MENA report gave no other details of the shooting, but said Ansar al-Sunna mosques had come under attack twice before in Sudan, including a 1996 incident in which 12 people were killed in Omdurman.
		Sudan is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections phased over nine days starting on Monday.

		Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Uthman Isma'il told Al Jazirah television yesterday that his country was responding to the disclosure of the Sudan nuclear test at a congressional hearing held by the House Armed Services Committee last week.
		The term "Sedan" was mistakenly transcribed as "Sudan" both by Federal News Service and by FDCH Political Transcripts and has been so recorded in the Nexis news data base, where it continues to cause mischief.
