Al Jean: There are a lot of Executive Producers, I'm actually the Show Runner, which means I have the ultimate responsibility for how the scripts are read at the table, what they look like, the guest voices, the music - I have to supervise all that.
Al Jean: From what I've heard from people who have heard the tracks, and didn't know what went happened back then, it's interesting for them to see what went on during the making of a show that they grew up with.

Al, Jean-Luc, and a lot of others are among those musicians who do push the limits.
In addition, some musicians may well have had enough of that type of music, and moved on to other things (Al DiMeola is playing here in Metro Charlotte, NC tomorrow, and the writeup refers to his experiments in "world music").

In a recent conference call, Simpsons writer and producer Al Jean spoke about the upcoming 400th episode, titled "Kent Always Say What You Want" (the title was originally "The Kent State Massacre" but that was changed for obvious reasons).
That sounds an awful lot like the recent kerfuffle surrounding Don Imus, but Al Jean said the idea for the episode was actually pitched to him a year ago.
Jean also spoke a little about The Simpsons movie, which he says they are still working on, adding tweaks here and there to make it something worthy of The Simpsons.
